HBO’s expansion of Westeros has been, almost by design, a museum of the past. House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and a planned Aegon’s Conquest film all mine the centuries before the show anyone actually watched. The one thing the studio has never had is a way forward from the 2019 finale. Kit Harington just cracked that door open again.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast this past weekend, Harington said he now feels “more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life,” adding that “there’s a world in which something could work.” As Deadline first reported, it is a pointed reversal from a man who, as recently as last December, called himself “done” with Jon Snow and said he did not want to go “anywhere near” Game of Thrones.

The turnaround matters because of what it undoes. Harington and HBO, working with George R.R. Martin, developed a Jon Snow sequel for roughly two years before shelving it in 2024. His own verdict then was blunt: “If we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much better if we don’t.” The abandoned version reportedly centered on a “broken” Jon returning north of the Wall, a bleakness HBO worried audiences would reject. Harington has since described needing the distance — years spent, in his words, doing “all these different things.”

The timing is what gives one podcast answer its weight. HBO’s fantasy division is running hot, and Harington is himself back on the lot as Gilderoy Lockhart in the studio’s Harry Potter series. Yet every active Thrones project excavates the past. A Jon Snow story would be the franchise’s only true sequel — the single thread that moves past the finale rather than filling in its backstory. That scarcity, more than any fan campaign, is the argument for reviving it.

For now it is a mood, not a project. There is no script, no greenlight, no timeline, and HBO’s Westeros calendar is already crowded: House of the Dragon is heading into its final season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second, with the Aegon’s Conquest feature in development behind them.

The man who last year swore he would not go near Winterfell again just left the gate ajar. In a slate built entirely on ancestors, Jon Snow remains the only character with a future.
