Inheritance: Bunker Scene Saves a Slow-Burning Family Drama

The underground bunker scene in Inheritance is where Vaughn Stein’s thriller finally finds its pulse—a claustrophobic confessional that dumps a truckload of secrets onto Lily Collins‘ wide-eyed Lauren Monroe. But by then, the film has already spent too much time above ground, meandering through a family drama that feels more like a glossy TV movie than a gripping mystery.

Stein’s direction has moments of visual flair—cold, sweeping shots of the Monroe estate accentuate the family’s wealth and isolation—but they’re undercut by pacing issues. The first hour is bogged down in exposition, introducing each family member with heavy-handed dialogue that makes their relationships feel like a Wikipedia summary rather than something organic.

Collins is the standout among the cast, selling Lauren’s shock and moral dilemma with authenticity. Simon Pegg, however, is miscast as Morgan Warner/Carson. His performance oscillates between campy menace and awkward sincerity, making it hard to buy into his revelations. Connie Nielsen fares better as Catherine, but her character arc feels rushed in the film’s hurried final act.

The script by Matthew Kennedy has a strong premise—exploring how far people will go to protect their legacy—but it stumbles in execution. The twists are telegraphed well in advance (Carson’s true identity is about as subtle as a sledgehammer), and the moral quandaries feel contrived rather than earned. When Lauren ultimately frees Morgan, it’s less a moment of defiance and more a plot necessity.

The film’s climax, where Catherine shoots Carson, lands with surprising emotional weight thanks to Nielsen’s performance. But the subsequent cover-up—burning the bunker—feels rushed, as if Stein realized he was running out of time. The ending ties up loose ends neatly but unsatisfactorily, leaving character arcs unresolved.

Inheritance has its moments—Collins’ committed performance, some striking visuals—but they’re not enough to overcome its structural flaws and pacing issues.
