Every Narnia adaptation lives or dies on a casting choice the camera never fully shows. Aslan, the great lion at the center of C.S. Lewis’s chronicles, works less as a character than as the story’s moral and theological gravity — a beast who is really an argument about goodness wearing fur. The actor who lends him a voice sets the register for everything around him. Greta Gerwig, adapting the saga for Netflix, has decided that register should belong to Meryl Streep, a choice that quietly reframes a children’s fantasy as a work of prestige authorship.

The shortlist, by Gerwig’s own account, was never long. As Deadline first reported, the director said she wanted “someone who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness” — an actor “older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child.” It reads less like a brief than like a spec sheet with exactly one name already written at the bottom.

The decision carries its own history. In the Walden Media films released between 2005 and 2010, Aslan spoke with the burnished authority of Liam Neeson; Gerwig’s pivot to Streep trades that patriarchal weight for something warmer and more mercurial. It suits a production she has described as wanting to feel like a “rock opera” — big, transporting and unembarrassed by scale. Even the lion’s redesign, with heterochromic eyes and a bold red-striped face, nods to David Bowie rather than to any storybook illustration.

For Netflix, the star is also the strategy. Coming off Barbie, the highest-grossing film of 2023, Gerwig is precisely the bankable auteur a streamer needs to legitimize a multi-film franchise bet, and Streep’s name performs on the marquee the same work her voice does in the mix: it signals that this Narnia means to be taken seriously. The company is treating the property less as content to be dropped than as a saga to be built out over years.

That ambition is visible in the rollout. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is set to preview in IMAX from February 10, 2027, open theatrically around the world — with the conspicuous exception of France — on February 12, and only reach Netflix subscribers on April 2. Emma Mackey plays the sorceress Jadis and Carey Mulligan joins the ensemble, but the film’s true center of gravity was fixed the moment Streep said yes.

It is a fitting gamble for a story that opens with the making of a world. Gerwig is building hers around a lion almost no one will see clearly — and everyone will recognize the instant it speaks.
