Venice has quietly redefined its Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement as less a valedictory than a coronation — an argument that the festival’s ideal artist is the one who refuses a single lane. George Clooney is that argument made flesh: the star who became a director, the director who became a producer of other people’s risks. Honoring him lets the Lido celebrate not a filmography but a whole model of what a movie career can be.

The detail that gives the ceremony its charge is whom La Biennale asked to deliver the Laudatio. Laura Dern shared the screen with Clooney only last year in Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” which itself premiered on the Lido — so the person handing over the trophy is a fresh collaborator, not a nostalgic peer. It is also a role she has played before: two decades ago she presented the same honor to David Lynch, the director who made her a star. Venice has effectively turned Dern into its ceremonial voice for anointing the auteurs who shaped her.

Artistic director Alberto Barbera, who recommended the award to the Biennale board, called Clooney “a complete and charismatic artist… who has transformed a deep vocation into one of the most luminous parabolas of contemporary film.” The numbers underwrite the rhetoric: Clooney is one of only three people ever nominated across six different Oscar categories — picture, director, lead actor, supporting actor, original screenplay and adapted screenplay — a spread that maps precisely onto the actor-director-producer identity the festival is honoring.

As Variety first reported, the citation salutes Clooney in exactly that triple guise, and the choice slots him into a lineage of American stars Venice has crowned rather than merely screened. The lifetime Lion has become the festival’s way of claiming the mainstream on its own terms — proof that a European art showcase can hold a Batman-to-Syriana-to-Argo career and read the whole of it as authorship.

Clooney will accept the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement on Wednesday, Sept. 2, during the opening ceremony of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, which runs on the Lido through Sept. 12.

Twenty years after she walked a Golden Lion over to David Lynch, Dern will do it again for the co-star she was trading lines with a season ago — Venice trusting the same actress, across two very different filmmakers, to say out loud why each one mattered.
