Netflix‘s adult-animation shelf is littered with unfinished stories — ambitious, expensive shows cut down a season or two in, their arcs left dangling the moment the algorithm cooled. That history is what makes the latest news around Blue Eye Samurai quietly remarkable: the streamer isn’t merely continuing its most decorated animated drama, it is granting the series something the format almost never receives — a designed, announced ending.

As Deadline first reported, Netflix has renewed the series for a third and final season, and it is producing that closing chapter back-to-back with the already-completed Season 2. Creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi will get to land Mizu’s revenge on their own terms rather than see it severed mid-swing, a rarity in a corner of the business where even hits are treated as disposable.

The vote of confidence is earned. Blue Eye Samurai arrived as one of the most critically garlanded things Netflix animation has produced, winning the Primetime Emmy for outstanding animated program and a clutch of Annie Awards, with Maya Erskine voicing Mizu, the mixed-race, blue-eyed swordfighter carving a revenge path through Edo-period Japan. Green, better known as a live-action screenwriter on Logan and Blade Runner 2049, and Noizumi built a show with the visual budget and grown-up ambition of prestige drama, and the company is finally treating it like one.

The structural tell is the tandem production. By making Seasons 2 and 3 together — the two have reportedly been in the pipeline side by side for over a year — Netflix compresses animation’s punishing lead times and locks in cast and crew for the whole arc. It is the logic studios reserve for a closing trilogy: commit to the entire ending up front and let the story escalate toward a fixed horizon instead of hedging season to season. The move places Blue Eye Samurai in the small club of Netflix animation allowed to conclude by design rather than cancellation, alongside Arcane, which wrapped its story after two seasons.

Season 2 arrives in January 2027, running six episodes, with production already wrapped; a teaser unveiled at Anime NYC opens on the stormy sea voyage teased at the end of Season 1, Mizu hauling a captive Abijah Fowler toward Europe before the action spills into the smog-choked streets of London. The final season is slated for 2028.

For a slate better known for pulling the plug, Netflix has drawn Mizu a map with the ending already marked — and handed her the seasons to reach it.
