Blade Runner 2099 trailer hands the hunt to Hunter Schafer and a dying Michelle Yeoh replicant

Every Blade Runner story has been, at bottom, a story about an expiry date. Ridley Scott’s original turned the built-in four-year lifespan of its replicants into tragedy, and Denis Villeneuve’s sequel asked what follows when a replicant gives birth. Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 keeps that clock running: its premise pairs a fugitive with a replicant who has only days left.

As Deadline’s Glenn Garner reported, Prime Video unveiled key art and a new trailer for the eight-episode limited series at New York Comic Con. Set half a century after the events of Blade Runner 2049, in a Los Angeles that has been reborn, “just not by humanity,” the story follows Cora (Hunter Schafer), a fugitive who takes on one last identity, that of a Blade Runner, in a final bid to stop running. She is forced to partner with Olwen (Michelle Yeoh), a replicant days from dying, to hunt down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse a fragile city. Deadline’s headline sums up the pair’s mission as a search for a “cure for all replicants.”

The setup inverts the franchise’s familiar arrangement. In Scott’s film and Villeneuve’s sequel, the Blade Runner was the one doing the hunting, whatever his own origins. Here the title is a cover worn by someone already on the run, and her partner is the very kind of being the job exists to retire. Yeoh brings the weight of her Academy Award for Everything Everywhere All at Once, while Schafer, who broke out as Jules in HBO’s Euphoria, carries the fugitive’s side of the partnership.

Behind the camera, the series is built to look like a continuation rather than a reboot. Silka Luisa, who previously created Apple TV+’s Shining Girls, is creator, showrunner and executive producer. Her fellow executive producers include Scott himself, through Scott Free Productions; Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, who produced Blade Runner 2049; Michael Green, who co-wrote that film; and Isa Dick Hackett, daughter of Philip K. Dick, whose novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? started it all. Jonathan van Tulleken, who directed the opening episodes of FX’s Shōgun, directed the first two episodes.

The cast also includes Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi, while Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben and Matthew Needham joined Luisa, Yeoh and Schafer on the Comic Con panel. Amazon MGM Studios and Alcon Television Group produce, and all eight episodes premiere on Prime Video on November 25.

Scott’s 1982 original starred Harrison Ford and Sean Young, and Ford returned as Rick Deckard in Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel opposite Ryan Gosling. Nearly 45 years on, the franchise’s newest Blade Runner is a fugitive borrowing the title, and the countdown that once belonged to Roy Batty now ticks inside her partner.
