Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas is less a slate than an assembly line, and its signature trick is that the line never stops — not for weather, not for scheduling, not even for a marquee recast a week into filming. Losing one of your most recognizable faces mid-shoot would be a crisis on most productions; on a Hallmark holiday movie it is a logistics note. What the network guards above any single performer is the archetype, and the archetype here — the twinkling, faintly otherworldly older woman who knows more than she lets on — is bigger than whoever fills it.

So when Carol Kane exited An Angel In My Stocking over a scheduling conflict, the answer was not to rethink the part but to find another beloved comic character actress to inhabit it. As Deadline first reported, Nancy Robertson — the deadpan Canadian favorite from Corner Gas and, lately, Lucky Hank — has stepped into the role of Margaret, the mysterious traveler who turns out to be a guardian angel. Kane and Robertson are not interchangeable actors, but they are interchangeable types: veterans whose faces telegraph warmth and mischief in a single reaction shot.

That is the casting logic Hallmark has refined across more than a decade of holiday programming. Kane carried four decades of oddball credibility, from Taxi and The Princess Bride to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt; Robertson brings the same lived-in comic timing to a network that increasingly leans on familiar faces to sell its low-stakes fantasies. A guardian angel who disappears without a trace and without being seen by anyone else needs a performer the audience trusts on sight — and recognition is the entire currency of the Countdown to Christmas brand.

Robertson joins a cast led by Fiona Gubelmann as Amanda, a divorced woman fleeing the holiday for a Vermont getaway only to find her ex-husband Jack (Marco Grazzini) booked on the same flight, with Siobhan Williams as her sister Lucy. Margaret’s reappearances nudge Amanda back toward Christmas, and toward the life she thought she had left behind. Behind the camera is Ali Liebert, herself a Hallmark on-screen regular now directing — a sign of how thoroughly the network has grown its own bench of trusted talent on both sides of the lens.

Production began this week in Vancouver, British Columbia, the year-round factory floor of North America’s Christmas-movie business, with An Angel In My Stocking set to premiere during Hallmark’s 2026 Countdown to Christmas event. Risa Shapiro, Samantha Sprecher and Kathy Kloves executive produce.

There is a small joke folded into the recasting. Margaret is a character defined by vanishing before anyone quite registers her — and now she has quietly changed faces before a single frame has aired. Hallmark’s machine treats the swap as a line item: the angel disappears, another takes her place, and the countdown keeps ticking.
