The Greatest: Prime Video’s Muhammad Ali series ends where Michael Mann’s Ali begins

Every screen life of Muhammad Ali has to choose its opening bell, and most choose the loudest one. The Greatest, a scripted biographical drama limited series arriving on Prime Video, chooses the room before the noise: it follows the young Cassius Clay of Louisville, played by newcomer Jaalen Best, through the years that turned an amateur with an Olympic gold medal into the man who would announce a new name to the world. Where Michael Mann’s Ali raised its curtain on the night Clay took the heavyweight title from Sonny Liston, this series makes that night its destination.

The cast is built around a household before it is built around a ring. Omari Hardwick plays his father, Cassius “Cash” Clay Sr., and Dana Gourrier his mother, Odessa “Bird” Clay; Kai Parham is his brother Rudy, who would later become Rahaman Ali; Amin Joseph plays Liston. Michael Ealy appears as Malcolm X and Giovanni Ribisi as the trainer Angelo Dundee. Ben Watkins, who created Cross for Prime Video, is the creator and showrunner and directs the opening two episodes. Amazon‘s own description leans the same way as the casting: “The world remembers an icon, but The Greatest is about a man, a husband, a father, a brother, and a son.”

The title is itself a quotation. Ali called himself the greatest long before the boxing establishment agreed, gave the phrase to his autobiography, The Greatest: My Own Story, and then to the 1977 film in which he played himself. Mann’s Ali, released in 2001 with Will Smith in the role, took the decade that followed the Liston fight and closed in Kinshasa with the Rumble in the Jungle. Regina King‘s One Night in Miami, from 2020, compressed its drama into the hours after that same fight, with Eli Goree as Clay sharing a motel room with Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown. Read in sequence, Ali’s screen history keeps arriving at the Liston night from one side or the other. The new series is the one that walks up to it slowly.

That choice is the most interesting thing about the project before anyone has seen a frame of it, because duration in this case is the argument. Mann had roughly two and a half hours for ten years of a life; Watkins has eight episodes for four. A limited series has room a feature film does not: room for a father who shares his son’s name, for a brother who boxed alongside him, for the trainers and handlers who gather around a contender before he is anyone in particular. The premise points toward a show more interested in how a public persona gets assembled than in restaging famous rounds. Whether eight hours can carry that weight is something the episodes, not the marketing, will have to settle.

The history in question is not neutral ground. Clay won light heavyweight gold at the Rome Olympics in 1960 and came home to a Louisville that was still segregated. By the time he beat Liston in Miami Beach in February 1964, he had grown close to Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam, and within weeks he was no longer Cassius Clay: Elijah Muhammad gave him the name Muhammad Ali. His father opposed the conversion, and the friendship with Malcolm X broke apart soon after. Those are the threads the casting points to, a father named Cassius, a brother who would also take a new name, Malcolm X in a recurring role, and they are exactly the threads earlier Ali dramas tended to settle in a montage.

In the trailer released by Prime Video, the story opens in Louisville, with a young Clay weighing what professional boxing could mean for him after the Olympics. It is a modest starting point for a story the audience thinks it already knows, and it suits a series whose real subject is the gap between the boy his parents named and the man he decided to be.

There is also a question of who is telling it. Amazon bills The Greatest as the first authorized scripted series about Ali, produced with access to his estate. Lonnie Ali, his widow, is an executive producer, and so are executives from Authentic Brands Group, whose Authentic Studios is among the production companies; Michael B. Jordan produces through Outlier Society alongside Roc Nation, PolyGram Entertainment and Grace: A Storytelling Company. Authorization itself is not new in this lineage. Ali approved the project that became Mann’s film and put his own body on screen in the 1977 version. What is new is the scale: a season of television given entirely to the four years in which he fought, inside and outside the ring, for control of his own name.

That is where the series lands on something it cannot resolve on its own. The Greatest dramatizes a young man refusing the name he was born with and insisting that the world call him what he chose, and it does so as an officially sanctioned production, made with the people who now look after that name. A story about claiming your own identity, told with the blessing of those who guard it: can an authorized portrait show the moment someone stopped asking for permission?

What to know before pressing play. All eight episodes of The Greatest premiere together on Prime Video on November 4, 2026, in more than 240 countries and territories. It is a scripted drama based on Muhammad Ali’s real life, not a documentary, and the season covers the period from his Olympic gold in 1960 to his first heavyweight title in 1964. Jaalen Best leads as Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali, with Omari Hardwick, Dana Gourrier, Kai Parham and Amin Joseph in the main cast, and Michael Ealy, Giovanni Ribisi, Erica Tazel, Reno Wilson and Chris Jericho, as the wrestler Gorgeous George, in recurring roles. The series was filmed in Toronto, Hamilton and Cobourg, Ontario, in 2025, and Stanley A. Smith composed the score.
