Competitive sales in television tend to reward a package more than a pitch: a lead who can carry a show and a creative team that has already made one work. Amazon’s newest drama arrives with both. Taraji P. Henson, the Academy Award nominee who headlined Fox’s music-world drama Empire, will star in and executive produce Whiskey Matriarch, and one of the writers joining her is Attica Locke, who sat on that show’s writing and producing teams.

As Deadline first reported, the series landed at Amazon in a competitive sale after initially being set up at Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group. Amazon’s representatives declined to comment, and plot details are being kept under wraps, which leaves the title as the only public clue to what the drama is about.

The creator is the least familiar name on the call sheet. Whiskey Matriarch comes from Alesia Dangerfield, an up-and-coming, Los Angeles-based writer from Maryland who will also write and executive produce. Dangerfield is best known for her work on the writing staff of the Paramount+ reboot of The Game. Building a star vehicle around a rising creator is a calculated bet, and the people placed around her look chosen to shore it up.

Sisters Attica and Tembi Locke will also write and executive produce. Both are New York Times bestselling authors, and together they co-created and executive produced Netflix’s romantic drama From Scratch, inspired by Tembi’s memoir and starring Zoe Saldaña. They are currently co-showrunners, writers and executive producers on Peacock’s adaptation of Kennedy Ryan’s romance novel Before I Let Go. Malcolm D. Lee, the director of The Best Man films and comedies including Girls Trip and Night School, will direct and executive produce alongside Dominique Telson for Blackmaled; Lee is already an executive producer on Before I Let Go. Henson and Jamila Jordan executive produce for TPH Entertainment, with Third Road Production also on board.

The deal adds to a crowded calendar for Henson. She most recently starred in Netflix’s Why Did I Get Married Again?, another reteam with her longtime collaborator Tyler Perry, and this year she made her Broadway debut in August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, opposite Cedric the Entertainer. Next she will be seen in Netflix’s Give Me Some Sugah, directed by Tasha Smith. Her TPH banner holds a first-look television deal with Fox Entertainment Studios and signed a two-picture film deal with Netflix in October 2025.

The company also spent this festival season on the documentary side: TPH took Barry Avrich’s Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been to TIFF, where it won the 2026 People’s Choice Documentary Award. Weeks after that audience prize for a film about singer Darlene Love, Henson’s banner has turned to scripted television, and its next story is one Amazon competed to win but is not yet ready to tell.
