The moment Gang Nam-soon (Lee Yoo-mi) tears apart a car door with her bare hands, you know Strong Girl Nam-soon isn’t your average rom-com. This spin-off of the 2017 series Strong Girl Bong-soon swaps cutesy romance for a gritty crime drama, albeit one with a superhuman twist. The show’s premise—a young woman with extraordinary strength returning to her homeland to reunite with her family—is compelling on paper, but the execution is a mixed bag.

Lee Yoo-mi’s physicality is the series’ standout element. Her portrayal of Nam-soon is grounded in tangible action, making the fantastical elements feel real. Whether she’s dismantling criminals or navigating the complexities of her newfound family, Lee Yoo-mi brings a raw energy to the role that keeps the audience engaged. The dynamic between Nam-soon and her mother Hwang Geum-joo (Kim Jung-eun) is particularly noteworthy. Their shared superhuman strength creates a unique bond, though it’s often overshadowed by the show’s convoluted drug case plot.

The series falters when it tries to juggle too many subplots. The romantic tension between Nam-soon and Detective Ryu Si-oh (Ong Seong-wu) feels forced, and Byeon Woo-seok’s villain Gang Hee-sik lacks depth, reducing him to a one-dimensional antagonist. The show’s attempt to blend comedy, drama, and sci-fi often results in tonal whiplash—one moment, Nam-soon is dismantling criminals with her bare hands; the next, she’s awkwardly flirting with Si-oh.

Where Strong Girl Nam-soon truly shines is in its performances. Lee Yoo-mi carries the series with her charisma and physicality, while Kim Hae-sook as the grandmother Gil Joong-gan steals scenes with her fiery presence. The supporting cast, particularly Ong Seong-wu and Byeon Woo-seok, add layers to the story, even if their characters sometimes feel underdeveloped.

The series’ final episodes pick up momentum, culminating in a satisfying climax that ties up most of the loose ends. However, the pacing issues and inconsistent tone make it a bumpy ride. The soundtrack is a standout, with its mix of upbeat tracks and emotional ballads enhancing the show’s highs and lows.

Strong Girl Nam-soon is a flawed but entertaining watch. It’s not as tight or emotionally resonant as its predecessor, but it offers enough action, humor, and heart to keep viewers engaged. The series serves as a spin-off to the 2017 series Strong Girl Bong-soon, which is also known for its blend of comedy and drama.

The show’s audience acclaim, with its final episode recording 10.42% in nationwide ratings, speaks to its popularity. However, the critical reception has been mixed. Some viewers have praised the performances and action sequences, while others have criticized the show’s pacing and tonal inconsistencies. The series aired on JTBC from October 7 to November 26, 2023, every Saturday and Sunday at 22:30 (KST), and is also available for streaming on Netflix in selected regions.
