The opening scene of “Rana Naidu” is a brutal display of power—Rana dispatches his enemies with cold precision, the camera lingering on the grimace of effort and the splatter of blood. This is Netflix India’s original series, an adaptation of Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” and it wears its influences proudly: a morally compromised fixer navigating the underbelly of Bollywood, with all the violence and profanity that entails.

Directed by Karan Anshuman and Suparn Verma, the series stars Rana Daggubati as the titular antihero, a man who solves problems for the film industry’s elite but finds himself outmatched when his father (Venkatesh) is released from prison. The performances are where “Rana Naidu” shines brightest. Daggubati delivers a brooding, intense turn as Rana, though he’s often one-note—rarely smiling, constantly seething. Venkatesh, however, steals the show with his portrayal of Naga Naidu, a complex figure whose emotional journey adds depth to the otherwise gritty narrative.

The cinematography by Jayakrishna Gummadi is visually striking, using warm and dark tones to accentuate the grim atmosphere, while John Stewart Eduri’s background score amplifies the tension. The series doesn’t shy away from provocative content—sex, violence, and profanity are liberally sprinkled throughout, though Deepa Gahlot of Rediff.com finds the overuse of certain expletives annoying. That said, the heavier themes—generational trauma, family dynamics, and the inescapable cycle of violence—give the series a layer of pathos beneath its glossy surface.

The series premiered on Netflix in March 2023, with the first season consisting of ten episodes averaging around 50 minutes each. The production process was meticulous, with principal photography commencing in October 2021 and wrapping up in May 2022. The marketing campaign included a teaser released during the Netflix Tudum event in September 2022, building anticipation for the series’ debut.

Where “Rana Naidu” falters is in its storytelling. The first season was described as populist and provocative by some critics, but Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV criticizes the series for its monotonous pacing, noting that it never quite breaks into a canter despite its potential for tonal variations. The narrative sometimes feels disjointed, and the character arcs, while compelling at times, are unevenly developed.

The second season, released in June 2025, introduced Arjun Rampal as an antagonist but suffered from a lack of momentum—critics noted that “a whole lot of nothing happens.” This stagnation is particularly disappointing given the series’ strong performances and visual style. The narrative struggles to balance its gritty crime drama elements with its family saga undertones, resulting in a tone that feels precarious and at times, inconsistent.

The series also faces criticism for its explicit content, with some viewers questioning how it was approved for viewing given its cusswords and sexually explicit scenes, which hit like a ton of bricks. While profanity and violence are par for the course in gangster dramas, the liberal sprinkling of certain expletives can feel excessive and detract from the overall narrative.

Despite these flaws, “Rana Naidu” has its moments of brilliance. The series is visually compelling, with Gummadi’s cinematography creating a stark contrast between the glamour of Bollywood and the darkness of its underbelly. Eduri’s score adds an extra layer of tension, enhancing the series’ atmospheric qualities. The performances, particularly from Venkatesh, are standout elements that elevate the material.

The series is aimed at viewers who enjoy gritty crime dramas with a focus on family dynamics and moral ambiguity. It appeals to those who appreciate complex characters and visually striking storytelling, though it may not resonate with audiences seeking more nuanced narratives or those put off by its explicit content.

In the end, “Rana Naidu” is a series that has moments of brilliance but is held back by its own ambitions. It’s visually compelling and features standout performances, particularly from Venkatesh. However, its narrative flaws and tonal inconsistencies prevent it from reaching its full potential.
