Friends Sex and Games: Prime Video’s German key-swap series staged 80 intimate scenes like stunts

Four couples, one bowl, a handful of house keys. Friends Sex and Games, the new German relationship dramedy from Prime Video, builds a whole series out of a party rule: the men drop their keys in, the women each draw one, and whoever draws a key spends the night with its owner. Paula Kalenberg and Fridolin Sandmeyer lead the ensemble as Anna and Paul, the couple at the centre of an old clique of friends.

Anna and Paul have been together since their school days. They have a teenage daughter, a house with a garden and a pool, and a sex life that runs on routine. Their closest friends, Julie and Valentin and Bella and Leo, are long-term couples too. Then Samu comes back to town. He was Anna’s crush when they were teenagers, he left in a hurry, and he returns as a successful DJ with his girlfriend Siena, the two of them just back from Ibiza. They are the ones who put the game on the table. The producers sum up the deal in four words: no strings attached, no obligations.

About 80 intimate scenes, each one planned

The decision that defines this series was made before anyone stood in front of a camera. Emilia Bähr, the intimacy coordinator on the production, told the German news agency dpa that it was the project with the most intimate scenes of her career so far, around 80 in total. That number turns the premise from a provocation into a scheduling problem, and the cast talks about it in exactly those terms.

Sandmeyer, who plays Paul, says every sex scene was discussed in advance and “precisely choreographed, almost like a stunt”. His questions were practical ones: which touches are there, what should the camera show, how high is the nudity level in each scene. Eric Cordes, who plays Samu, adds the clause that matters most on a set like this: even if a touch had originally been planned, it could be raised openly at any time if it didn’t feel right on that day. Kalenberg, in Prime Video’s press kit, credits a trusting ensemble, says physical closeness was rehearsed carefully with the coordinator, and says insecurities could be discussed openly with the series’ two directors, Barbara Kronenberg and Sinje Köhler.

The outcome, by dpa’s account, is less bare skin than this material could have delivered. The agency is explicit that the show is not trying to be an arousing erotic series, naming Euphoria and Heated Rivalry as what it is not, while noting that the dialogue gets very explicit in places. Frank talk, less skin than the title promises: the premise suggests that frankness, not exposure, is the actual selling point.

What the key game is really testing

Read the character notes and the bowl of keys starts to look like a pretext. Anna is a committed wedding planner who runs the business with Bella, and the question she keeps circling is small and brutal: are we boring? Paul treats their near-absent sex life as simply how things go after so many years, until the game wakes something in him. Julie, an artist and godmother to Anna and Paul’s daughter, lives in an almost sexless relationship with Valentin while wanting a child. Valentin comes from a very conservative family and starts to recognise inclinations he pushed away for a long time. Bella and Leo, an illustrator, have the most openly sexual relationship in the group. Siena, a promoter who treats life as one long party, is the one who sets everything in motion.

Among the storylines dpa singles out are an unfulfilled wish for a child and repressed homosexuality. Neither is about swapping partners. Both are things a long relationship can bury under routine for years, and the game is the device that drags them into daylight. The setup points at an old argument in a new register: whether monogamy is a choice a couple keeps making, or a habit nobody remembers agreeing to. UFA’s own pitch calls what follows an emotional powder keg.

The cast frames it as a conversation rather than a lecture. “For me there is no universal answer to the question of open or closed relationships,” Cordes says. What matters more, in his view, is that couples talk about how they want to shape their relationship, which he calls “a process that can keep changing over the course of a life.” Lilja van der Zwaag, who plays Siena, goes further: “I think we talk too little about sex in public. Compared with other times, our society today is rather prudish and uptight.” If the series revives some of that conversation, she says, that alone counts as a gain.

A Mexican format with a German clique

Friends Sex and Games is a remake of El juego de las llaves, a Mexican Prime Video series that ran for several seasons and became a hit in Latin America. The German version, known during production as Game of Keys, is made by UFA Fiction, the company behind Prime Video’s Maxton Hall, with Ulrike Leibfried and Sinah Swyter as executive producers. The scripts come from a four-person team led by head writers Vivien Hoppe and Antonia Rothe-Liermann, joined by Ben Brooks and Marlene Melchior. Jan-Marcello Kahl and Jieun Yi are the directors of photography.

German viewers have seen this kind of transplant work before. Bora Dagtekin’s Das perfekte Geheimnis took the Italian format of Perfetti sconosciuti, a group of friends and a game that exposes them over one dinner, and rebuilt it with a German cast. Any adaptation lives or dies on whether the setup survives the move, culturally and on the page. Here the friends are millennials with comfortable homes and long-settled relationships, which is exactly the kind of stability the game is designed to shake.

The first verdict from Germany

Gregor Tholl, who reviewed the series for dpa ahead of launch, found it written with heart and humour and lovingly acted. His reservations are specific: the characters all live far too chic a life, a good deal of the plotting feels very constructed, and the whole thing may stay a little too stuffy for its own subject. For a series whose title promises transgression, the main early complaint is that it plays safe.

The bowl gets passed around once in the premise. The harder question, the one a series about four couples can raise but not settle, is what happens to the rules a couple wrote for itself once both partners have seen what lies on the other side of them.
