Criminal Minds: Evolution Ends With Season 20, and the Cast Filmed It Without Knowing

The CBS farewell was planned down to the last table read. This one came after the cameras stopped

The first time Criminal Minds ended, its cast got to grieve on schedule. They knew the last table read was the last one, they shared the final days on set with fans, and A.J. Cook said she hoped the closing episode would be full of emotional scenes because everyone would probably be crying anyway. The second ending is arriving the other way around. Paramount+ has confirmed that the coming season of Criminal Minds: Evolution will be the show’s last, and those episodes had already wrapped when the decision was made.

That reversal is what the announcement cannot carry. This is a procedural that taught its audience to expect a proper send-off, a show that once faked the death of one of its own agents and brought her back a season later. This time the farewell was never written into the work. The people who built the Behavioral Analysis Unit on screen finished what turned out to be their final run before anyone had called it that.

What Paramount+ decided, and when

Paramount+ broke the news on Friday, October 30, alongside first-look photos from Season 20, which has no premiere date yet and will air in 2027. The streamer had renewed the show early, in March, before Season 19 debuted; that season ran from May to July. According to Deadline, this is the first official cancellation under the streamer’s new leadership, headed by Casey Bloys as co-chair and chief content officer for Skydance Direct to Consumer, and the call followed a recommendation from the previous Paramount+ regime.

Deadline also reports that Season 20 finished production earlier this fall, which means it will not give fans a proper ending. Showrunner and executive producer Erica Messer let the timing show in her statement: “While suddenly navigating the end of this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for our remarkable cast, writers, directors and crew who have poured their hearts into this show.” She added that the fans’ loyalty “has kept ‘Criminal Minds’ going for two decades.”

A cast that grew up inside the show

The legacy here is personal. Cook has played Jennifer “JJ” Jareau since the first season, through an exit and a return, and JJ’s two sons on screen are played by Cook’s own sons. Kirsten Vangsness has been Penelope Garcia since season one. Joe Mantegna arrived as David Rossi in season three and stayed. Paget Brewster joined as Emily Prentiss in season two, left after season seven, came back as a regular in season twelve and now leads the unit as its chief. The original ensemble’s most notable absence is Matthew Gray Gubler, on the show from its first episode, who did not return to Evolution except as a guest.

Cook put words to that bond in 2019, while shooting what everyone believed was the final season on CBS. “I grew up here. This is my family. My family doesn’t know life without this show either,” she told Parade. She also said the cast knew “lightning is probably not going to strike twice with that kind of chemistry.” It did strike twice, on a different platform. What did not repeat was the warning.

The last of a streaming lineage

Set beside the other network hits that streaming tried to keep alive, Evolution outlasted its company. Deadline notes it is the last show of its kind on Paramount+, after continuations of SEAL Team, Frasier and NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Nor is it leaving for lack of an audience. The series sits in the platform’s Top 10, Deadline reports, which points to cost, or to the awkward fit of a broadcast-style procedural on a streamer, rather than to viewers walking away. Even if its combined run stops at 20 seasons, it is tied for fifth among the longest-running drama series, behind Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order, NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy. All four are still on the air.

What Season 20 holds

Season 19 closed the book on Zach Gilford’s serial killer Elias Voit and ended with a slight time jump, TheWrap notes. Messer told TV Insider that Season 20 would “probably” center on Rossi, the team’s most senior profiler, and that “it feels emotionally that Rossi’s hit really hard in Season 20,” with the team rallying to help everybody get through it. A season built around the veteran taking a hard emotional blow will now double as the show’s goodbye, by accident rather than design.

Mantegna, Cook, Vangsness, Aisha Tyler and RJ Hatanaka return, with Adam Rodriguez and Brewster. The series is produced by 20th Television and CBS Studios. All 19 seasons of Criminal Minds and Evolution are streaming on Paramount+ ahead of the premiere. Deadline describes the run as over “for now,” a hedge this franchise has already earned once.

In 2019, Cook said the cast was savoring every last moment. This time the last day on set came before anyone knew it was the last, so the goodbye passes to the audience, who will watch the final season of Criminal Minds knowing what its cast did not.
