Apple’s camera AirPods are real — macOS showed them before the launch

A demo video inside Apple‘s macOS 26.7 release candidate shows AirPods with integrated cameras actively working with Visual Intelligence and Siri, confirming a product Apple has not publicly announced. The earbuds carry the internal codename B790. Developers found the file during routine inspection of the RC build, including setup flows, OS-level privacy notices, and a functional demonstration of the camera identifying objects in the wearer’s environment. Apple said nothing.

The cameras are positioned to feed Siri a continuous read of what the wearer is facing. In the demo, a man holds a book so the AirPod camera can identify the title; Siri answers a question about it. The setup process references ‘Visual Intelligence on AirPods’ directly, using the same framing Apple has applied to iPhone camera intelligence since the iPhone 16 series. An indicator light activates when the system is transmitting visual data. If the AirPod is obstructed, the OS alerts the user: ‘To get the most accurate information about things in your environment, make sure AirPods are not covered.’

The design follows the AirPods Pro 3 form factor. This positions the cameras not as photography tools but as ambient sensors — always-on, ear-mounted, pointed outward at whatever the wearer happens to be facing. That framing matters for Apple’s regulatory narrative: Visual Intelligence, in Apple’s terminology, processes data on-device rather than streaming to a server. The distinction is meaningful. It is also invisible to anyone standing three feet away from a stranger wearing these earbuds.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported a September launch alongside iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Ultra — a compressed fall lineup that would be Apple’s most product-dense September in recent memory. That timeline, if accurate, means AirPods with cameras ship before any regulatory body has had time to evaluate them in market. The EU AI Act’s provisions for real-time biometric processing could apply to visual-intelligence wearables under some readings; the UK ICO has signaled interest in always-on ambient AI devices. Apple is not waiting for those conversations to conclude.

The privacy calculus for the wearer is already visible in the build. The indicator light, privacy notices, and obstruction alert treat the camera as something to be managed deliberately. None of those signals are visible to bystanders — the people whose faces, documents, and environments the camera will sweep incidentally. This is not a new problem for wearable cameras, but AirPods carry a different scale of potential adoption. Apple Watch sold 30 million units in its first year; AirPods have outsold it by a factor of four annually at peak.

What the macOS 26.7 find confirms is a platform expansion. Apple built Visual Intelligence into the iPhone 16 camera, extended it to Vision Pro, and is now routing it through the most ubiquitous computing device it has ever shipped. Camera AirPods — worn all day, pointed at the world, connected to Siri — would be the broadest deployment of AI environmental awareness Apple has attempted. The product has no name, no price, and no official existence. The code disagrees.
