Zuria Vega says she owes the telenovela audience a great deal, and she has said it while declining to go back to them. For the best part of a decade she was one of Televisa’s most reliable leading ladies, the heroine who carried a telenovela night after night for the better part of a year. Then she stepped off that track, and the women she has played since belong to a different kind of television: a Mexican pelotari among the first professional sportswomen in Spain, the wife at the centre of a real murder case that still divides the country, a woman who hires a young escort to trap her abusive husband. Her own summary of the shift was unusually blunt. Promoting a film a few years ago, she said she was happy above all because it was the first one her children would be allowed to watch, “because I never make things my kids can watch.”

The surname made the first part easy and the second part necessary. Her father was Gonzalo Vega, the actor of Cuna de lobos and El lugar sin límites, and her mother is the actress Leonora Sisto. Her sister Marimar Vega and her brother Gonzalo Vega Sisto act as well. Zuria Valeria Vega Sisto grew up in Mexico City and made her first stage appearance as a child extra in La señora presidenta, a play her father starred in and directed.

Television came early. Vega, born on 10 January 1989, was seventeen when she was cast as Roberta, the daughter of Luz María Zetina’s character, in the series S.O.S.: Sexo y otros secretos. Within a year the producers Roberto Gómez Fernández and Giselle González gave her Renata Higareda in Alma de hierro, opposite veterans Alejandro Camacho and Blanca Guerra, and the part won her the TVyNovelas award for best female revelation in 2009. Nathalie Lartilleux then handed her a first lead, Estrella Marina in Mar de amor, opposite Mario Cimarro.

The leading-lady years followed a reliable rhythm. She headlined Un refugio para el amor with Gabriel Soto, which brought the People en Español award for revelation of the year in 2012, then played Lupita in the comedy Qué pobres tan ricos with Jaime Camil. In 2015 she was Abigail in Angelli Nesma’s Que te perdone Dios, opposite Mark Tacher, and from 2017 Juan Osorio cast her as Julieta in Mi marido tiene familia with Daniel Arenas, a hit big enough to earn a second season in which her brother joined the cast. Between 2013 and 2019 she was nominated five times for the TVyNovelas award for best lead actress. She never won it.

Away from the soundstages she was building something sharper. Her first film, Sin ella, directed by Jorge Colón, earned her a Diosa de Plata as best female revelation. She played Julia in Manolo Caro’s No sé si cortarme las venas o dejármelas largas on stage in 2010 and again in the 2013 film, worked with Caro once more in Elvira, te daría mi vida pero la estoy usando, and took the lead in the horror remake Más negro que la noche. The theatre critics of the APT twice singled her out for comedy, for Sin cura and later for Los bonobos, with the María Victoria award in 2015.

The tidy version of her career says she outgrew the telenovela. The less tidy version is that the format gave her almost everything, including the audience that still follows her, and that leaving it meant giving up top billing on the most watched screen in Mexico for ensemble casts on streaming platforms. In 2022 she put it with care: five years without a telenovela, a debt she insisted she would always acknowledge, and “the story that makes me decide to come back has not arrived.” The new roles also carried risks the old ones never did. In Prime Video‘s ¿Quién lo mató?, the 2024 series about the 1999 killing of television host Paco Stanley, she played Brenda Bezares, a living woman whose family objected to the production and announced legal action. Mario Bezares, whose arrest and later release sit at the heart of the case, later praised her performance, which says something about how she approached a part that could easily have turned into caricature.

The streaming run started with Netflix‘s La venganza de las Juanas in 2021, where she played Juana Manuela. Las pelotaris 1926, a Mexico-Spain period series that premiered on ViX+ in March 2023, cast her as Chelo, and won her the Produ award for best lead actress in a historical series. That same spring she appeared in Quiero tu vida, a film produced by Salma Hayek, and went back to the stage in Alan Estrada’s Siete veces adiós. In July 2025 Netflix released Pecados inconfesables, eighteen episodes in which she plays Helena Rivas, trapped in an abusive marriage, who recruits a younger escort, played by Andrés Baida, to catch her husband in a compromising situation and becomes the main suspect when he disappears.

Her newest series pushes further into adult territory. El círculo, which arrived on Netflix on 7 October 2026, adapts Jorge Zepeda Patterson’s novel Los corruptores into eight episodes directed by Alejandro Lozano and Bernardo de la Rosa. Vega plays Amelia, the only woman in a group of four lifelong friends, alongside Osvaldo Benavides, Michel Brown and Raúl Briones, whose bond starts to crack when a leaked video pulls them into a web of blackmail and political corruption. She has described the appeal in personal terms: “You never finish knowing someone one hundred percent,” and friendships between grown men and women, she argued, are territory fiction rarely explores.

She married the actor Alberto Guerra in 2014, and they have two children, Lúa and Luka. Her father died in October 2016 after a long illness. When Guerra spoke publicly about leaving his addictions behind and credited his wife and children, she declined the role of rescuer: “I haven’t saved anyone. I think love is what saves life.”

Netflix has not announced a second season of El círculo, and Vega has never said the door to the telenovela is closed. For now the actress who once measured success in episodes is choosing parts by a different test, and the next one will show how far she is prepared to take it.
