Professional wrestling likes its champions to look inevitable. Liv Morgan has built her version of the job on the opposite impression. For most of her WWE career she has been the performer the audience felt free to laugh at, first as the rookie who lasted eight seconds in a Royal Rumble and later as the champion whose debut song critics and listeners largely panned. At Money in the Bank in New Orleans she pinned Stephanie Vaquer to take the Women’s World Championship back, less than a month after losing it at an untelevised show in Chile. Her career keeps asking how many times a wrestler can be counted out before the counting becomes part of the act.

Gionna Jene Daddio was born in Morristown, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Elmwood Park, one of six children raised by their mother alone after their father died. Her early education was short on straight lines: she left Becton Regional High School after being told she would have to repeat a grade, earned a GED and enrolled at Bergen Community College. Competitive cheerleading and backyard wrestling with her brothers gave her the only training she had before WWE.

The route in was accidental. While working and modeling for Hooters she met Eric Arndt, who pointed her toward Joe DeFranco’s gym in Wyckoff, where WWE scouts found her. She signed in October 2014, four months after her twentieth birthday, and went to NXT, the company’s developmental brand. Her first televised match came under the name Marley, a loss to Eva Marie; within a month she was wrestling as Liv Morgan.

The main roster arrived on November 21, 2017, when she debuted on SmackDown alongside Ruby Riott and Sarah Logan as The Riott Squad, a punk-styled trio of villains. Morgan still carries the date tattooed on her neck. The group gave her a look and a sound, though not much of a singles identity, and the low point came at the 2019 Royal Rumble, where she was eliminated after eight seconds, still the shortest stay in the women’s match. The squad was broken up by a roster shuffle that spring, and Morgan spent the following years rebuilding herself as a crowd favourite.

The payoff came on July 2, 2022. She won the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match and cashed in the contract the same night on Ronda Rousey, taking the SmackDown Women’s Championship, the belt WWE has since renamed the Women’s World Championship. The reign lasted 98 days, and Rousey took the title back at Extreme Rules that October.

That first run is also where the case against her was written. Her SummerSlam defense against Rousey ended in a disputed finish, and Slam Wrestling named the rivalry the worst feud of 2022. On that evidence, the top title had arrived on audience goodwill before her matches could carry it. The following year went worse. She won the Women’s Tag Team Championship with Raquel Rodriguez, then lost time to two shoulder injuries, and in December 2023 she was arrested in Sumter County, Florida, for cannabis possession. Prosecutors dropped a felony synthetic-cannabinoid charge within weeks; the remaining misdemeanor closed in February 2024 with a no-contest plea and a fine.

What came next turned the doubts into material. She returned at the 2024 Royal Rumble and branded her comeback a “Revenge Tour”, working through the women she said had wronged her. When she attacked Rhea Ripley on Raw in April 2024, Ripley was genuinely injured and vacated the Women’s World Championship. Morgan beat Becky Lynch for it at King and Queen of the Ring that May, and at SummerSlam she sealed a heel turn by kissing Dominik Mysterio, Ripley’s on-screen partner, before joining The Judgment Day. She added the first Women’s Crown Jewel Championship that November and held the world title for 226 days, until Ripley took it from her on Raw’s Netflix premiere in January 2025. Pro Wrestling Illustrated named her Comeback of the Year, and WWE’s own Slammy Awards made her Female Superstar of the Year in 2025.

Injury interrupted again. A dislocated shoulder against Kairi Sane in June 2025 kept her out for five months, and she came back at Survivor Series: WarGames in November, helping Mysterio take the Intercontinental Championship from John Cena.

The current year has been her busiest. Morgan won the 2026 women’s Royal Rumble, entering at number 14 and eliminating Tiffany Stratton last, then beat Vaquer at WrestleMania 42 in a match of about six minutes, decided after interference from her Judgment Day partners. She performed her song “Trouble” live on the way to the ring that night; the music video, released days earlier, became her entrance theme and drew mostly negative reviews. She lost the Queen of the Ring final to Iyo Sky, beat Sky at SummerSlam, and then dropped the title to Vaquer in Santiago in September, with Becky Lynch as guest referee, ending a 147-day reign. The rematch at Money in the Bank on October 10, 2026 was a triple threat with Lynch. Lynch pulled the referee out of the ring to stop one count, Vaquer superkicked her off the apron onto a ringside table, and Morgan used the opening to hit Oblivion and win her fourth reign.

The screen work runs alongside. Her first feature was The Kill Room, Nicol Paone’s 2023 art-world crime comedy with Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and Joe Manganiello, in which she played Emma; reviewers mostly dismissed the film. The bigger bet is Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, directed by Takashi Miike from a screenplay by Daisuke Tengan, in which Shun Oguri plays a corrupt detective and Lily James an FBI agent investigating the disappearance of a politician’s daughter, the role Morgan plays. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September to mixed reviews.

Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo opens in Japan on October 23, 2026, through Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan, with Neon holding the American rights. Morgan will arrive at that release as the reigning Women’s World Champion, with the belt back in her hands.
