Of the drama students who entered the Korea National University of Arts together and later became famous, Ahn Eun-jin took the longest to get there. Classmates such as Kim Go-eun and Park So-dam were already being cast in films while she was still singing in musicals in Daehangno, the small-theatre district of Seoul. When television finally noticed her, it cast her as the warm, faintly comic friend at the edge of the frame. Her career since has been an argument with that first impression, and the part she is playing on weekend nights right now, a film director whose ten-year relationship is quietly coming apart, is the most adult version of the argument so far.

Seoul is where it starts. Ahn grew up there as the elder of two daughters, and she traces the impulse back to primary school, when co-hosting an event at her church left her writing in her diary that she wanted to become a celebrity. She kept performing at school festivals through her teens and then joined the acting programme at K-Arts, in an intake that would also produce Lee Yoo-young and Lee Sang-yi.

Ahn, born in May 1991, entered K-Arts in 2010 and had her first professional stage credit while still a student, in the 2012 musical The Sorrows of Young Werther. In 2015 her professor Yi Sang-woo cast her in The Story of Tail Cotton for the Chaimu troupe, a production she has described as a turning point because she spent it convinced she was failing and learned to keep working anyway. Later that year she played Kim Sol in Park Hee-soon’s musical Infinite Power, and reviewers singled out her comic timing and her voice.

Television arrived in a rush. After signing with the agency Imagine Asia in 2018 she moved through small roles at a pace that left little time to be noticed: the Netflix zombie saga Kingdom, The Crowned Clown, Possessed, My Fellow Citizens and Diary of a Prosecutor, five dramas in 2019 alone. The one that stuck was OCN’s Strangers from Hell, where she played So Jung-hwa, a precinct officer who keeps digging into a case everyone else would rather close.

Then came Hospital Playlist. Writer Lee Woo-jung and director Shin Won-ho kept her waiting months between a first audition and a second meeting, and she has said she had all but given up on the role. As Chu Min-ha, the obstetrics resident who spends two seasons pursuing an aloof senior doctor with cheerful persistence, she became the supporting player viewers quoted to each other. The Asia Artist Awards gave her a Focus Award in 2020, and the spin-off Resident Playbook brought Min-ha back in 2025 as a professor, married, the show revealed, to the doctor she had chased.

She did not use that goodwill on another sunny role. Her first lead, in JTBC’s The One and Only in 2021, was Pyo In-sook, a terminally ill woman in a hospice who has stopped feeling much of anything. On the big screen she played Consort Jo in Ahn Tae-jin’s palace thriller The Night Owl, which earned her best new actress nominations at both the Blue Dragon and Grand Bell film awards. In 2023 she was Lee Mi-joo, the nail artist and former girlfriend of Lee Do-hyun’s character in The Good Bad Mother, and then Yoo Gil-chae in MBC’s My Dearest, a noblewoman caught up with Namkoong Min’s outsider during the Qing invasion of Joseon. Writer Hwang Jin-young cited Gone with the Wind as the model, and Ahn gave the series its Scarlett: vain, stubborn and harder to dislike with every episode. It climbed to double-digit ratings and brought her the Top Excellence Award at the MBC Drama Awards, a Best Couple prize shared with Namkoong, the Grimae Award for best actress and a first Baeksang nomination for best actress in television.

The pattern since then is less flattering than the trophy list suggests. Her bleakest choices are the ones audiences have skipped. The One and Only never rose above about 2.4 per cent in the cable ratings, and Netflix’s apocalyptic drama Goodbye Earth, released in 2024, was hollowed out before it reached the screen: co-lead Yoo Ah-in was charged with illegal drug use, his role was cut back, and the series arrived late with Ahn carrying a story that reviewers called overcrowded and badly paced. It still earned her a best actress nomination at the Blue Dragon Series Awards, but it confirmed what the hits had already hinted at. The industry wants her in love stories, and she keeps reaching for something darker.

The past year has leaned toward what the industry wants. In Kim Eun-sook’s Netflix fantasy Genie, Make a Wish, which topped the platform’s non-English chart in its first full week in October 2025, she played the heroine’s grandmother restored to youth by a wish, a second character named Lee Mi-joo in her filmography. A month later SBS launched Dynamite Kiss, a romantic comedy opposite Jang Ki-yong in which she plays Go Da-rim, a single woman who pretends to be a mother to land a job at a baby-products company and pay off her sister’s debts. It won her an Excellence Award and another Best Couple prize at the SBS Drama Awards in December. She also appeared in the film Citizen of a Kind, Ra Mi-ran’s voice-phishing drama, in early 2024.

Her current series tries to have it both ways. A Love Other Than Yours, written by Yoo Soo-ji and directed by Hwang Seung-gi and Lee Ga-ram, began on KBS2 on September 12, 2026, airing on Saturday and Sunday nights and streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Ahn plays Lee Mi-do, a director whose next film has just collapsed and whose relationship with Seo Kang-joon‘s Namgoong Ho, a man she met at seven and has dated for a decade, is starting to give way. It is a romance in shape and a study of exhaustion in content, and the early domestic ratings, around 2.6 per cent for the opening weekends, sit well below those of the drama it replaced in the slot. Its fate overseas will be measured on streaming instead.

Off screen she keeps her private life private. She has been represented by UAA since 2021, and no project beyond the current series has been announced. The drama is scheduled to run its fourteen episodes until November 1. What she picks next will show which version of Ahn Eun-jin she wants to keep, the friend audiences fell for at the hospital or the woman who keeps asking them to follow her somewhere colder.
