For most of his career Adam Brody was the funniest person standing next to the lead. On television he was the comic-book-quoting son in a Newport Beach mansion; in the cinema, usually the friend or the brother-in-law who gets a few good lines before the plot moves on. Then Netflix cast him as Noah Roklov, a rabbi who falls for an agnostic podcaster in Nobody Wants This, and the supporting player became the reason people pressed play. The press called it a comeback. He had never left. What changed was that someone finally built a show around the timing he had been bringing to other people’s films for twenty years.

He grew up in suburban San Diego, the son of Valerie Jill Brody, a graphic artist, and Mark Alan Brody, a lawyer, both Jewish and both originally from Detroit. He is six years older than his twin brothers, Sean and Matthew. He has said he “pretty much lived at the beach” as a teenager, and his grades at Scripps Ranch High School showed it. After a year at MiraCosta College he dropped out at nineteen and moved to Los Angeles to become an actor.

Born on December 15, 1979, he was barely twenty when a year of classes and auditions brought the role of Barry Williams in the television film Growing Up Brady (2000), a bit part in American Pie 2 (2001) and, in the third season of Gilmore Girls, the recurring part of Dave Rygalski, the guitarist who joins Lane Kim’s band and then courts her. In 2003 Josh Schwartz cast him as Seth Cohen in the Fox drama The O.C. (2003–2007). Brody improvised some of the character’s lines, and Seth, an anxious, motor-mouthed outsider in a world of yachts and debutante balls, made him a teen idol. The Los Angeles Times called the character “TV’s sexiest geek”; Time wrote that he had redefined unapologetic nerdiness on screen.

The fondness fans still feel for Seth is not entirely shared by the man who played him. In Alan Sepinwall’s oral history Welcome to the O.C., Brody admitted that his interest faded in the later seasons, that he let his distaste for the episodes be known on set and that he is “not proud” of how he behaved. Schwartz has said the writers turned Seth into a stoner partly to cover the actor’s lethargy. Leaving early, Brody said, never seemed an option or the honourable thing to do. When the series ended after four seasons, he said he was “not unhappy” about it.

The film years kept him off the top of the poster. He took the small role of Benjamin Danz in Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), a studio assistant in Jason Reitman’s Thank You for Smoking (2005) and the lead in In the Land of Women (2007), whose director pushed the shoot back eight months to wait for him. In Karyn Kusama’s Jennifer’s Body (2009), written by Diablo Cody, he played Nikolai, the indie-band singer who offers Megan Fox’s character as a sacrifice; the film flopped on release and was later reclaimed as a cult horror comedy. Kevin Smith‘s Cop Out (2010), Scream 4 (2011) and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) followed, along with the porn actor Harry Reems in the biopic Lovelace (2013). Whit Stillman gave him two of his driest comic parts, in Damsels in Distress (2011) and the Amazon pilot The Cosmopolitans (2014).

He moved behind the camera without much noise. He starred in and produced the Crackle series StartUp (2016–2018), playing a banker who launders his father’s money into a cryptocurrency venture, and executive produced The Kid Detective (2020), in which he played Abe Applebaum, a former child sleuth stuck in a town that stopped needing him. Around it came a genre run: the adult Freddy Freeman in Shazam! (2019), the groom’s alcoholic brother Daniel in Ready or Not (2019), one of the men who take a seemingly drunk woman home in Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman (2020), and Seth Morris, the perennial bachelor among the hero’s old friends, in the Hulu miniseries Fleishman Is in Trouble (2022).

Nobody Wants This arrived on Netflix in 2024. Created by Erin Foster, the series pairs Brody’s Noah, a rabbi in Los Angeles, with Kristen Bell‘s Joanne, a podcaster who talks about sex for a living and does not believe in God. Viewers were soon calling Noah the “hot rabbi”. In February 2025 he won the Critics’ Choice Television Award for best actor in a comedy series, and the role brought him the first Golden Globe nomination of his career, followed by a second in January 2026, as well as his first Emmy nomination, for lead actor in a comedy series.

The success came with an argument. Jewish women writers pointed out that the series sets its Jewish women, Noah’s ex-girlfriend Rebecca, his sister-in-law Esther and his mother Bina, as controlling obstacles, while the non-Jewish heroine gets to be the free spirit. Foster defended the characters as comedy types rather than ethnic ones. Brody’s warmth is part of the problem critics describe: the rabbi is written as the prize, and the women around him are what stands in the way. At the 2026 Emmys the second season was shut out of the acting categories altogether even as viewers kept watching.

The second season, released in October 2025, gave a guest part to Leighton Meester, his wife, whom he met in 2010 while filming The Oranges in Westchester, New York. They married in February 2014 and have a daughter, born in 2015, and a son, born in 2020. In January 2025 their home was destroyed in the Palisades Fire. Away from sets, Brody has played drums in the bands Big Japan and The Shortcoats and co-wrote the Wildstorm comic miniseries Red Menace (2007). The third season of Nobody Wants This, all ten episodes, arrived on Netflix on October 22, 2026, with Noah and Joanne moving into a home together.

His next film goes back to the director who saw the leading man first. He is set to star opposite Laura Carmichael in Whit Stillman’s A Night at Claridge’s, adapted from Patrick Hamilton’s novel The Slaves of Solitude and set in 1943, with Brody as Lieutenant Dayton Pike, a charming American officer who comes between two women in a boarding house outside Blitz-torn London. Filming is due to take place in Limerick, Ireland. It will be his third collaboration with Stillman, who was casting Adam Brody as the romantic lead years before Netflix made it official.
