Javier Bardem leads HBO’s The Spread, a Miami financial thriller from the writer of Ozark

Matthew Vaughn has built his cinema on controlled detonations — the Cockney crime grammar of Layer Cake, the anarchic pop-art of Kick-Ass, the gleefully meta-cinematic franchise engineering of Kingsman. He has never once moved at a pace other than his own. With The Spread, Vaughn makes his first sustained turn to prestige television, and the creative alignment he has assembled — a Spanish Oscar winner, the architect of Ozark, and one of the most cinematically charged cities in America — makes the move feel earned rather than opportunistic.

HBO has ordered The Spread as a new original drama series. Javier Bardem — who took the Academy Award for No Country for Old Men and has anchored productions across the arthouse and the blockbuster alike — will star in and executive produce. Vaughn, a three-time BAFTA nominee, will direct and executive produce. Bill Dubuque, whose three Emmy wins are anchored by his creation of Ozark, writes alongside Sean Sansiveri. The series is a co-production with FIFTH SEASON TV Studio, with Brad Weston producing for Makeready and Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom for Topic Studios.

The Spread locates its story in a Miami the announcement describes as “Wall Street South” — a subtropical collision of industry titans, elite hedge funds and staggering wealth. At the center stands a visionary billionaire who gathers around him the brilliant, the hungry and the dangerous, then turns their ambitions loose on the markets that power America. His aim is both territorial and historical: to shift the center of economic gravity southward, and to determine how long the party lasts.

Dubuque is well-positioned for this territory. Ozark, his most celebrated creation, built its seven seasons on a governing premise that financial pressure and moral corrosion are the same force — that the deeper you move money through the wrong channels, the more of yourself you leave behind. The Spread transplants that argument from the Missouri lake country to a city that has long performed its own version of the American dream in a different register, louder and more exposed to the light.

Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, cites a longstanding ambition to set a scripted series in Florida, describing the project as “a kaleidoscope of extraordinary, visionary talent who is as fearless as the story itself.” Noah Greenshner, EVP and Head of TV Creative for FIFTH SEASON, calls it “a gripping story of power and ambition, set against the vivid, glamorous backdrop of Miami.”

Alongside Bardem, Vaughn and the writing team, Brad Weston executive produces for Makeready, and Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom executive produce for Topic Studios.

No premiere window has been announced. What the order establishes is a creative alignment of formal ambition, moral architecture and sheer star weight aimed at one of the most television-ready cities in America — and HBO’s continuing signal that the prestige drama form still has places left to explore.
