Hard Knocks moves to the offseason — an entire division, from the combine to camp

The series that taught a generation of football fans to watch the game from the inside out is restructuring itself. Hard Knocks—the HBO documentary franchise that NFL Films has built across a quarter-century into the gold standard of sports television, its 146 Sports Emmy Awards outlining a record that no comparable production comes close to—is moving its camera. Not to the bench. To the room where a franchise decides what it is, at the moment when the scoreboard has gone dark and the real work has barely begun.

HBO and NFL Films have announced the return of the “Offseason” edition of Hard Knocks, broader in scope than any version of the franchise has attempted. The new installment will follow four teams across a single NFL division for the full stretch of the roster-building calendar: the NFL Scouting Combine, free agency, and the NFL Draft. The specific division has not been disclosed.

The precedent for the format is recent. “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants”—the first edition of its kind, which debuted in 2024—earned a Sports Emmy Award nomination while following one organization’s front office and coaching staff through free agency and the draft. The new installment expands the unit of study from one franchise to four, adding the contrasts and collisions between organizations that a single subject cannot provide.

“Our fans are increasingly interested in how NFL rosters are built, as well as the people who build them,” said Ross Ketover, senior executive at NFL Films. “With Hard Knocks moving to the offseason, we are excited to showcase the tireless work that happens across an entire division, from the moment a season ends to when the minicamps begin.” The new installment replaces the In-Season edition that has aired since 2021, which most recently followed the NFC East and, in the previous season, the AFC North.

The logic of the move is legible. In-season access compresses drama into a campaign already underway—wins and losses, the locker room under pressure, decisions that cannot wait. The offseason format operates on a different register: the Combine as proving ground for anonymous prospects, the opening of free agency, the draft board assembled from hundreds of hours of tape, and the first minicamps where a rebuilt team begins to understand itself. Following four teams through that same window multiplies the points of comparison considerably.

Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Seattle Seahawks is currently airing on HBO and available to stream on HBO Max with new episodes through September 1. The New England Patriots, making their first appearance in the franchise, will be the 2027 training camp subject. The offseason edition, following a full division through the roster-building season, debuts that same year on HBO and HBO Max.

What Hard Knocks has always understood is that the most revealing access is not the sideline. It is the room where someone has to decide.
