When Valve released Steam Frame, its standalone VR headset, the first question for longtime VR players was which titles would be there from the start — and which had enough momentum to earn the conversion. Cubism, Thomas Van Bouwel’s critically acclaimed spatial puzzle game, answers with a day-one update that adds standalone support and something the PC version has never had: passthrough.

The update rewires Cubism’s Steam release to include an Android build, which runs natively on Steam Frame without a tethered PC. It also introduces monochrome passthrough — the ability to see your physical surroundings in black and white while colorful puzzle pieces float in your space. Until now, that feature had been exclusive to Cubism’s version on Meta Quest, Samsung Galaxy XR, and Pico. The Steam Frame release closes that gap, and the title has earned Steam Frame Verified status in the process.

Cubism launched in 2020 and established itself as one of the cleanest introductions to VR puzzle design: 90 challenges across two campaigns, each asking players to assemble irregular three-dimensional shapes from a set of colorful blocks. The shapes are never familiar, the solutions never obvious — the game relies entirely on depth perception and spatial reasoning that only make sense inside a headset. Critics gave it near-unanimous praise on release, with scores around 80–85 across major VR outlets and Steam user reviews sitting at 100% positive, making it one of the medium’s most recommended starting points for new owners.

Van Bouwel is a Brussels-based solo developer who has been expanding Cubism across platforms since launch. He operates under Creature, a VR game label founded in 2023 by industry veterans whose portfolio spans Budget Cuts, The Light Brigade, and THRASHER. His other current project, Laser Dance — a mixed-reality obstacle course — is in early access on Meta Quest 3. Cubism is his most widely distributed title and his longest-running one.

The Steam Frame update is live on Steam, where the base game is also available in its PC VR edition. Cubism runs on Meta Quest, Pico, and Android XR headsets as well. Review codes are available through Future Friends Games on PressEngine.

With Steam Frame shipping with more than 100 verified standalone titles, Cubism’s presence on that list signals something about what the VR library’s baseline should look like — games that have already earned trust, arriving on new hardware with the features that hardware makes newly possible.
