Singer Tate McRae’s ‘Housewife’ Tops Billboard Global 200 as US Radio Keeps It at No. 2

Tate McRae has the biggest song in the world this week and the second-biggest in America, and the two results are not a contradiction. They are a readout of what each chart counts. “Housewife,” the first single from her forthcoming fourth album, opens at the top of Billboard’s global rankings, which are built on streams and downloads alone. On Billboard’s main US singles chart, where radio still carries real weight, it stops one place short.

That split is the most revealing part of McRae’s week, more than the crown itself. The coverage has called it a race she won. Read closely, she won the part of the race a modern pop rollout is designed to win, and lost the part that only time on the airwaves can buy.

On streams alone, nobody beat “Housewife”

Billboard reports that the song drew 55.9 million streams and 6,000 downloads worldwide in its first tracking week, enough to debut at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart. Of those streams, 34.9 million came from outside the United States. It is the Canadian singer-songwriter’s second No. 1 on each list and the first to open there: “Greedy” had to climb, then led the Global 200 for two weeks and Global Excl. U.S. for five in 2023-24.

It also ends a long reign. Karol G, Judeline and rusowsky’s “BbY WOW” slips to No. 3 on the Global 200 after six weeks on top. In Australia, “Housewife” goes straight to No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, McRae’s first leader there; “Greedy” peaked at No. 2.

Why the Hot 100 tells a different story

In the US, the song debuts at No. 2 on the Hot 100, behind Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas.” Variety’s breakdown holds the key detail: “Housewife” logged 22.9 million US streams, more than the No. 1’s 20 million. Where it lost was radio. McRae’s single reached 12.7 million in airplay audience in its first week; “Choosin’ Texas” pulled 58.6 million radio impressions.

The gap says more about time than taste. One song is in its first chart week, the other in its 53rd, and Langley’s hit returns to the summit for a 25th nonconsecutive week, a record it already owned. The global charts leave airplay out of the formula entirely, so the same seven days produce a No. 1 there and a No. 2 here. Even so, “Housewife” is McRae’s highest-charting Hot 100 entry as a lead artist, Rolling Stone notes.

A rollout built for the first seven days

The campaign was short and front-loaded. McRae announced the single on Instagram with cover art of herself in a red bikini, pushing a pram stuffed with dollar bills, and described the song on The Tonight Show as being “about a woman who can’t be contained,” Capital FM reported. Song and official video arrived together. Three days later she performed it at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, squarely inside the tracking window. By midweek, according to Rolling Stone, “Housewife” had taken the top spot on Spotify’s global chart.

It needed every one of those pushes, because the week was crowded. Olivia Rodrigo’s “Expectations,” remixed with Chappell Roan, rocketed 145-2 on the Global 200, and Zach Bryan’s “Lies” with Lana Del Rey opened at No. 5. On the Hot 100, Rodrigo and Roan landed at No. 3, Bryan and Del Rey at No. 4, and Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero” fell to No. 5 after three weeks at No. 1.

The single was announced on Oct. 7 and released with its video on Oct. 15, the Victoria’s Secret performance was on Oct. 18, and Luminate’s tracking week ran Oct. 16-22. The global charts that carry the debut are dated Oct. 31, 2026. “Housewife” is on RCA.

Earlier this year, long-time collaborator Ryan Tedder said McRae “could be the biggest artist in the world,” in remarks Capital FM relayed. On the one Billboard chart that counts only what listeners choose to play, for one week, she is. Now US radio has to decide whether it agrees.
