Shiina Ringo ‘裸’ (Hadaka): the Fuji TV drama single about love that outlasts words

Alice Lange

Shiina Ringo’s new single ‘裸’ (Japanese for “naked” or “bare”) arrives as the commissioned theme for Fuji TV’s Thursday drama ‘ラストノート’ (Last Note), a romantic series about two people from opposite walks of life pulled into an intense and complicated love. The song, written and composed by Ringo herself with a small, deliberately intimate ensemble, is built around a premise that sounds almost too simple to sustain: what matters most between two people cannot be said out loud.

For listeners who have followed Ringo across the theatrical density of her early albums and the formal restlessness of her band work with Tokyo Jihen, ‘裸’ registers as a noticeable contraction. The production credits just four players: Shun Ishiwaka on drums, Keisuke Torigoe on bass, Yukio Nagoshi on guitar, and Masaki Hayashi on Wurlitzer — assembled to sound like something held very still rather than a composed arrangement. A commissioned drama theme by one of Japan’s most architecturally ambitious songwriters turns out to be her most exposed piece in recent memory.

Commissioned drama themes are a structural fixture in the Japanese music industry. Major acts cycle through them regularly, and their quality tends toward serviceable rather than essential. Ringo has historically used commissions as a space to test a formal idea she would carry further in solo album work. The title ‘裸’ suggests the idea she is working toward this time: that language is, in the moments that matter most between two people, a second-best option, and music has to carry what remains. It is a different kind of ambition than the theatrical layering of her peak work, and the restraint of the arrangement reinforces it — the song does not prove its thesis by accumulation. It proves it by what is absent.

That thesis is partially convincing on a single listen, and the limits of the piece are the limits of its context. A drama theme is structurally obligated to land emotionally at first contact, without the accumulated weight that makes Ringo’s best-known work feel as dense as geology after years of listening. Whether ‘裸’ is a fully realized formal statement or a precision commission delivered at a disciplined remove from her most ambitious work is a question one listen cannot answer. The drama’s conventional romantic register does not help: ‘ラストノート’ is not the kind of series that typically complicates a theme song into something more than it was asked to be.

‘裸’ was released digitally on July 10. ‘ラストノート’ airs Thursday evenings on Fuji TV, with the first episode broadcast on July 9.

Whether the song outlasts the drama it was written for may be the sharpest test of how far Ringo has pushed the form this time — and how much the barest emotional register can hold.
