Riko Sasaki’s latest full-length, RI PATHOS, is one of the more personal statements to emerge from Japan’s anisong and alternative rock crossover. The Lantis album collects 10 all-new tracks, with every song drawing from Sasaki’s own life — a project she described as mapping her journey in a straight, unbroken line.

The title fuses the character 李 from her given name Riko with the word pathos, a shorthand for both the artist’s name and her stated goal of emotional depth. Sasaki wrote liner notes for all 10 tracks herself, detailing specific incidents and decisions — the setbacks she called nourishment for future dreams.

The lead single, Touri Seikei (桃李成蹊), takes its title from a classical Chinese proverb: the plum tree does not speak, yet a path forms beneath it. Sasaki reworks this into something more urgent — that one’s way of living itself draws people in, and that even failed ambitions leave something behind. The arrangement, by Tanaka Dobiue of the band the bercedes menz, builds on a hardcore foundation and produces one of the album’s most confrontational moments.

Across 10 tracks the album shifts fast. Maru de Matryoshka has djent-heavy grooves that contrast with Sasaki’s voice in metallic fashion; Kamigakari is pop-punk at a frantic pace; Kyoku Chōshinsei (Hypernova) opens into arena-rock territory; Hitoihira slows everything down. Dead Rhetoric, reviewing the album, called it an impressive display of her charisma across varied instrumentation and specifically noted how dynamic her voice proves against the pummeling riffs.

The album’s reach beyond Japan remains an open question. RI PATHOS is not available on Spotify, which keeps it outside global streaming data and limits discoverability for listeners outside Japanese digital storefronts. With fewer than a dozen Last.fm listeners at launch, the international crossover case remains to be built, and the absence from the largest streaming platform is a real structural disadvantage in a market that runs on catalog visibility.

The limited edition includes Tezukuri no Uta, the first track Sasaki has written entirely by herself, both music and lyrics. Live dates under the RI PATHOS Live in Osaka and RI PATHOS Live in Tokyo banners follow the album release, bringing the project onto the stage for the first time.
