Acclaimed for his electrifying performances, the late Irish musician and songwriter Rory Gallagher has left an indelible mark on the world of music. Recognised as one of the greatest guitarists in history, his legacy continues to inspire fans and musicians across the globe. This October, fans and collectors will have the opportunity to own a tangible piece of this music legend’s life as The Rory Gallagher Collection is set to be auctioned by Bonhams in London.

The collection, sourced directly from the Gallagher family, comprises nearly 150 items, including a remarkable range of guitars, amps, and accessories from Gallagher’s prolific career. Leading this collection is Gallagher’s iconic 1961 Fender Stratocaster, arguably the most recognisable Strat in the history of rock music, estimated to fetch a staggering £700,000-1,000,000.

This legendary instrument was first purchased by Gallagher in 1963 from Crowley’s Music Store in Cork, Ireland. It is believed to be the first Stratocaster to have ever reached Irish shores and has since become synonymous with his name. The guitar’s wear and worn finish have contributed to its iconic status and it has been featured in several landmark exhibitions and on numerous guitar magazine covers.

Since 2004, Fender has been honouring Gallagher’s legacy by creating and selling replica models of his famous guitar as part of their artist signature series. The originals, however, remain unmatched in their nostalgic appeal. The Stratocaster has not only been played by noteworthy musicians like Johnny Marr and Joe Bonamassa but also holds a special place in the heart of the Gallagher family.

Claire Tole-Moir, Head of Bonhams Popular Culture department, reflects, “Rory Gallagher’s 1961 Fender Stratocaster is one of the most recognisable guitars in the world. It was an integral part of Gallagher’s life and served him throughout his career. This guitar was used to carve out his legacy as one of the greatest guitarists of all time…”

Gallagher’s brother and former manager, Dónal Gallagher, who has treasured these instruments since Rory’s passing, commented, “After nearly thirty years… I have decided to facilitate the release of his instruments for sale, so that these emblems of his legacy can be enjoyed by others.”

Bonhams is honoured to be entrusted with bringing this iconic Stratocaster to auction and is excited about the approaching landmark sale. Sir Brian May, an admirer of Rory Gallagher, has previously said that Rory was one of the reasons he does what he does, showcasing once again the indelible influence Gallagher has had on music history.
