Roc Nation founder Jay-Z to Headline the Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show He Spent Years Booking for Others

Jay-Z has spent years deciding who gets the biggest stage in American music, and for his own turn he needed exactly one vote. The music world has been laughing about that all week. The joke lands, but it stops short of the part that makes this booking worth reading closely: the halftime show is one of the very few major stages Jay-Z has never played, and the road to it began a long way from a stadium in Los Angeles.

Shawn Carter grew up in the Marcy Houses, a public housing project in Brooklyn’s Bedford–Stuyvesant, raised by his mother after his father left. When no major label would sign him, he sold CDs out of his car and built his own label, Roc-A-Fella, with Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke. Almost every chapter since has followed that template. When the door stays shut, he ends up owning the building.

Jay-Z and the halftime show: the producer books the headliner

The NFL confirmed the news during halftime of the Cowboys–Eagles game on Monday Night Football, with Apple Music announcing that the “GOAT’s out of the bag.” In his statement, Jay-Z drew the arc himself: “From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey. Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.”

The unusual part is the chain of command. Roc Nation, the company he founded, has co-produced the show with the league since 2019, and NBC Los Angeles reports it recently extended that role through 2029. Complex reports that Roc Nation will executive produce this set too, which means his own company is producing its founder’s show. Puck reported the week before the announcement that Jay-Z had settled on himself after weighing who should follow Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar, with Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber also in the conversation. TMZ had reported that Harry Styles was on the wish list.

Roger Goodell presented it as the plan all along. “When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request,” the NFL commissioner said, “that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him.”

Why most of the coverage reads it as a punchline

The reaction has mostly run on one line: the man who picks the halftime act picked himself. Cam’ron and Mase spent part of an episode of It Is What It Is laughing at earlier, unverified reports that Roc Nation was struggling to land a headliner. “Just say you’ve been lining this up for three-and-a-half years,” Cam’ron said, before admitting he would have done the same thing and that the show would be “fire.”

That reading holds as far as it goes. The overlap between curator and headliner is not hidden; it is the premise. The deal that made Jay-Z the show’s gatekeeper also has a shadow. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, it arrived in the wake of the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick, whom the rapper had once backed publicly, and the two have since fallen out.

What the punchline misses is how deliberately this year was built. The JAŸ-Z30 run marked three decades of Reasonable Doubt and a quarter century of The Blueprint: three nights at Yankee Stadium with Eminem, Nas, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Blue Ivy, stadium dates in London and Paris, and an HBO docuseries with Rick Rubin. Rolling Stone points out that he spent more time on stage in recent months than he had in years. The tour closed at SoFi Stadium, the venue for the game, with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Too Short joining him. NBC Los Angeles called those nights a warm-up.

Super Bowl LXI: the last big stage on Jay-Z’s list

His wife headlined the halftime show in New Orleans in 2013 and came back as a guest in 2016; Jay-Z himself has never performed at the game. The director is a familiar face as well. Complex reports that Hamish Hamilton will direct, the same director behind Jay-Z’s 2003 concert special and Beyoncé’s 2013 halftime set.

Super Bowl LXI is set for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, airing on ABC, ESPN and Disney+. The last time the game was played in Los Angeles, the halftime show was a West Coast summit with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. Jay-Z, 56, arrives with 25 Grammys, 14 number-one albums and a 2021 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, though he has released no album since 4:44 in 2017. He follows Bad Bunny, whose set Yahoo Sports reports drew a record 4.157 billion viewers across broadcasts and digital platforms in its first 24 hours.

For years, the halftime stage has been something Jay-Z handed to other people. In February, the kid who sold his CDs out of a car hands it to himself, in the stadium where he just finished rehearsing in public.
