Madrid producer Albert Feiler trades Celtic introspection for drum & bass on “Why Do We Stay?”

Months after the inward Flower Of Rain, his self-produced single sets a question about modern unhappiness to breakbeats and dream pop

A few months is barely a season in the life of most independent albums; artists usually spend it carrying the record from club to club, hoping it finds a second wind. Albert Feiler has spent it changing the subject. Flower Of Rain, the album the Madrid-based musician and producer released through FEP Producciones earlier this year, was an inward record, threaded with Celtic and new wave textures, about depression, anxiety and the slow climb back towards self-care. Its first follow-up, “Why Do We Stay?”, trades that intimacy for drum & bass, dream pop and a question aimed at everyone at once.

The question is the song’s whole engine. In the label’s press note, Feiler asks why we stay stuck in unhappiness even when, on paper, we have everything we need to be happy, and he points at a generation worn down by constant over-demand and by an idea of happiness increasingly tied to materialism and individualism. He has changed the way he writes, too, aiming for a collective message: the song is pitched as a shared reflection rather than a confession.

The production carries the same contradiction. Fast sequences and electronic propulsion run underneath ethereal synth pads and a vocal that stays noticeably calm and melodic, so the track sounds restless and still at the same time. Feiler produced it himself, as he did the album, on which he also handled mixing and mastering and played guitars, bass, keys, synths and programming. His usual reference points, Sufjan Stevens and Mike Oldfield, are still on the map, but the release now adds the German electronic project Schiller, the dream pop of Hibou and the breakbeat muscle of The Prodigy.

The single arrives with what FEP calls a “Dance & Lyric Video”, and it is the clearest sign of the new phase. Feiler, in sunglasses and a black suit, dances alone in a bare room between two ring lights while the walls flood pink, violet, red and cyan, with the lyrics subtitled in English and Spanish at the edges of the frame: “Why do we stay in the rain?” For an artist whose last chapter was about retreat, it is a deliberately extroverted image.

The pivot fits a career built in phases. After years of writing in private, Feiler first played his music in public in Murcia in 2017, paused, then relaunched the project in Madrid. Between 2018 and 2021 he played and produced in the synth-pop band In-Pulses, the source of the electronic streak that resurfaces here. The EP Memories followed in 2023, launched at the Madrid venue El Perro de la Parte de Atrás del Coche, then Love in 2024, presented at Contraclub, and the 2025 singles and videos “A Wonderful Day” and “Violator”. On Flower Of Rain, which landed in March 2026, singer Isa Atómica appears on nine of the 13 tracks.

“Why Do We Stay?” is out now on streaming platforms, released on 15 October 2026 through FEP Producciones, the Madrid label that also put out the album. The label says it is now booking Feiler for venues and festivals in 2027, so the real test of this louder, more outward Albert Feiler will come on stage.
