The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call is the story of a surgeon who walks into a struggling hospital and refuses to do anything by halves, and Netflix is now handling the show in the same spirit. Instead of renewing the Korean medical drama one season at a time, the streamer has put its second and third seasons into production together, with both of its leads, Ju Ji-hoon and Choo Young-woo, back in scrubs.

As Deadline reported, Ju returns as Baek Kang-hyuk, the genius trauma surgeon at Hankuk National University Hospital, and Choo again plays Yang Jae-won, the protégé he pulled into the trauma team. Ju brings the international following he built on Netflix’s period zombie thriller Kingdom; Choo, whose breakout came with The Tale of Lady Ok, is having a busy season, also leading Disney+’s Between Steps opposite Kim So-hyun.

Most of the hospital’s chain of command comes back with them. Yoon Kyung-ho returns as Han Yu-rim, the surgeon who first stood against Kang-hyuk and is now his trusted partner as well as the hospital’s chief of planning and coordination, and Jeong Jae-kwang is back as anesthesiologist Park Gyeong-won. The visible change is at the nurses’ station: Cheon Jang-mi, the trauma nurse Ha Young played in the first season, is now played by Jeong Ye-in, who came through a “rigorous audition process” to join the ensemble.

Behind the camera, nothing is being left to chance either. Lee Do-yun, who directed the first season, will helm the new episodes again and is also writing the scripts. The series adapts Trauma Center: Golden Hour, the web novel that grew into a Naver webtoon, with Studio N and Mays Entertainment attached as co-producers.

The audience figures explain the double commitment. The first season, released on Netflix in January 2025, reached the platform’s Top 10 lists in 63 countries and took the number one spot in 18 of them. Netflix has not announced a premiere window for Seasons 2 and 3.

In the first season, Kang-hyuk arrived at a hospital whose trauma team was struggling to keep up. For the next two, Netflix has kept that team’s core cast and its director in place, and changed only the actor playing the nurse who works beside them.
