Theater owners gathered at Cinema United’s Fall Summit came looking for proof that the studios have enough films to fill their screens, and Sony answered with a calendar rather than a sizzle reel. Its two headline bets now sit back to back at the end of the year: a Ridley Scott pirate adventure drawn from one of the most adapted novels in English, and the third chapter of a comedy franchise whose last instalment closed by mocking its own endless sequels.

As Deadline reported, Sony made a slew of release date additions and changes on Wednesday while exhibitors were in town. Chief among them is Scott’s take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, with Hugh Jackman as Long John Silver and Hugh Grant and Owen Cooper, the Emmy-winning young star of Adolescence, also in the cast. The studio’s logline keeps to the novel’s spine: a young boy uncovers the map to a legendary buried treasure, and the voyage that follows brings him face to face with Silver.

The second pillar is 24 Jump Street, which brings back Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as Jenko and Schmidt and Ice Cube as Captain Dickson. Rodney Rothman, co-director of Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, directs from a screenplay he wrote with Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed the first two films, produce alongside Neal H. Moritz. The title is the joke: “It took so long to make we had to skip one.” The road here included a scrapped Men in Black crossover once floated as MIB 23.

The rest of the reshuffle leans on genre and on filmmakers with global pull. Michelle Yeoh leads The Surgeon, an action thriller about a surgeon forced to operate on a mysterious captive who has to use her skills to escape. Narcs, starring Mason Thames and Ella Bright, marks John Phillips’ feature directing debut. Grandgear, from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki, and Helldivers, the PlayStation game adaptation that recently replaced Jason Momoa with Alan Ritchson in the lead, both change dates.

The logistics: Treasure Island opens on November 11, 2027, and 24 Jump Street follows on December 10, 2027. The Surgeon is dated for April 2, 2027, and Narcs for August 20, 2027. Grandgear moves up a month to January 14, 2028, landing on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, while Helldivers leaves its November 10, 2027 date for June 9, 2028.

Read the two November moves side by side and the trade is plain: Sony’s mid-November slot passes from a video-game adaptation to a novel first serialised in a children’s magazine in 1881, one day later on the calendar.
