Robert Carradine’s final screen bow anchors a retro horror shaped by Dario Argento’s shadow

The horror thriller that set out to channel Dario Argento wound up carrying a different, heavier weight. When Thomas J. Churchill began production on The 3 Killer Pigs, the film’s stated ambition was an homage — a creature feature scored by Marco Werba, one of the maestro’s own longtime collaborators, with Emmy-winning FX creature design from Marcel Banks and Anaglyph Studios. What nobody planned was that the film would also serve as a farewell.

Robert Carradine, whose credits spanned five decades — from Sam Peckinpah’s The Long Riders to Revenge of the Nerds to Lizzie McGuire — plays a sheriff in the film. He died in February at the age of 71. His last public appearance was at a sneak peek screening for The 3 Killer Pigs at the American Film Market in November of last year, meaning this project accompanied him to the very end of his public life. That kind of last-chapter gravity is not something any marketing campaign can manufacture.

The film pairs Carradine with Anson Williams — Potsie from Happy Days, who has also built a directing career in television — and Brian Austin Green, whose work stretches from Beverly Hills, 90210 to genre film appearances. Sharna Burgess, the Dancing with the Stars professional, makes her feature film debut here alongside Rachel Pizzolato (Waxman). The ensemble extends to William McNamara, Robert LaSardo, Sadie Katz, Tank Jones, Cody Renee Cameron, and others.

Churchill writes and directs, producing alongside lead producer Aleksandra Zorich Hunt through AZ PURE and Church Hill Productions. The premise — a farmer who resorts to extreme measures to reclaim his livestock, triggering a blood oath when the pigs return — is unapologetically genre, a vehicle for creature effects and atmosphere rather than psychological excavation. Churchill has made clear his intent to build a franchise: “We hope the audience continues to embrace The 3 Killer Pigs as we are planning to build a franchise with them,” he said in the film’s announcement.

What sets the project apart from the crowded lower tier of horror VOD is the Argento lineage. Werba has scored films for the Italian genre director; his presence here is a signal about the register The 3 Killer Pigs is aiming for. FX creature design by Emmy winner Marcel Banks and Anaglyph Studios, and makeup by Kaitlin Lyerly (Obsession), complete the pedigree. Whether the execution delivers on the ambition is a question the theatrical run will answer.

The 3 Killer Pigs opens in limited U.S. theaters on September 25, starting in New York. Quiver Distribution releases the film on VOD on October 23.
