Hollywood files Jessica Chastain under prestige: the Juilliard training, the Oscar for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, the Tony nomination, the long run of serious dramas. This weekend the prestige picture is the one in trouble. Chastain sits on the other side of the ledger, leading a lean Blumhouse horror film that the tracking places at the top of the chart.

The easy read of the frame is horror beats talk, Other Mommy against Aaron Sorkin‘s follow-up to The Social Network. That read misses the star. Chastain is not slumming in genre to repair a commercial profile. Horror is where she has always sold the most tickets, and Other Mommy asks her to carry one with no famous brand behind it.

Jessica Chastain’s surest openings have been scary ones

The pattern starts with Mama, the ghost story Guillermo del Toro executive produced and Andy Muschietti made as his feature debut. It opened at No. 1, and Zero Dark Thirty sat right behind it, which made Chastain the first performer in fifteen years to lead the top two films in the same weekend. Mama turned a $15 million budget into $148.1 million worldwide.

Then came It Chapter Two, where she played the adult Beverly Marsh in an ensemble that grossed more than $470 million worldwide. The awards work, from The Help to Zero Dark Thirty to Tammy Faye, built the reputation. The genre work built the box office record. Her recent screen choices leaned the other way, toward smaller films such as the independent drama Memory, opposite Peter Sarsgaard, and Dreams, which premiered in Berlin.

Other Mommy puts the whole pitch on her

Other Mommy is directed by Rob Savage, the filmmaker behind the lockdown hit Host and The Boogeyman, and produced by James Wan. Nathan Elston adapted Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House. Chastain plays two parts: Ursula, the mother, and the entity that takes her appearance to haunt the family’s home. The tracking coverage singles out that dual role as a major selling point.

That is what makes this weekend a test of her name rather than of a brand. Mama came with del Toro’s name as executive producer, and It Chapter Two was a sequel with an ensemble around her. Other Mommy has a two-year-old book, a director known to genre fans, and a lead actress asked to be both the victim and the threat.

The numbers behind Other Mommy and The Social Reckoning

Variety reports that Universal opens Other Mommy in about 3,200 North American theaters with a debut of $20 million or more in sight, on a production budget of $18 million. Independent trackers run hotter. Box Office Theory has it at $28.5 million to $35 million, and Boxoffice Pro lifted its ceiling to $35 million from an earlier range of $15 million to $25 million. The upper end would give it the best domestic opening for a horror book adaptation since It Chapter Two in 2019. Even the conservative figure would beat the $12 million opening of Savage’s The Boogeyman.

The Social Reckoning tells the opposite story. Sony is aiming for $7 million to $8 million on a $30 million budget for Sorkin’s companion piece to The Social Network, with Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg, Mikey Madison as a Facebook engineer and Jeremy Allen White as a Wall Street Journal reporter. The 2010 original opened to $22 million and won four Oscars. Variety critic Guy Lodge wrote that the new film “already feels behind the curve.”

Both films open in US theaters on Friday, October 9. Other Mommy, rated R for bloody violence and language, was moved there from an original May 8 date. The nearest holdover is Verity, the Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson thriller, which Variety expects to take $13 million to $16 million in its second weekend.

If the tracking holds, the prestige story of the weekend will belong to the horror film. The Oscar winner who keeps finding her biggest openings in the dark will have done it again, this time with no franchise and no famous title, only her own face in two roles.
