Hard Kill (2020): a one-night siege thriller from Bruce Willis’s late VOD era

Matt Eskandari’s 2020 action film traps a billionaire CEO, his daughter, and a small security team inside a single warehouse for one long night.

Donovan Chalmers, a tech billionaire played by Bruce Willis, owns a piece of proprietary software that someone else is willing to take a child for. He hires a small private-security team to protect a warehouse meeting; the team is led by Derek Miller, played by Jesse Metcalfe. A militant cell shows up, kidnaps Chalmers’s daughter Eva, and uses her to force the trade. The film stays inside one industrial complex from dusk until first light.

Directed by Matt Eskandari, Hard Kill was shot in Cincinnati in early 2020 under the working title Open Source. It opened in the United States on August 21, 2020, in limited theaters and on video on demand. The film slots into the long run of action pictures Willis made in his final years on screen before his retirement following an aphasia diagnosis.

The script keeps the geography small. A warehouse, a few corridors, a server room, a loading dock. The siege structure is functional in the way these films usually are: secure the perimeter, lose it, fall back, regroup, confront. There is no twist large enough to change what the movie is about, and the film does not pretend otherwise.

Eskandari shoots tight. Hand-held in the corridor sequences, locked-off for the standoffs. Willis works mostly from a seated position and his scenes are short. Jesse Metcalfe carries most of the foot-soldier load opposite him, and Tyler Jon Olson reads as the kind of antagonist who walks slowly because the script needs him to. The score is a low synth bed used to mark transitions; it does its job and steps back.

Hard Kill belongs to the prolific late-career run of Willis VOD action films, the ones that were largely judged as a block rather than individually. Watched in 2026, with what we now know about the actor’s health at the time, the scenes where he is at his stillest read differently than they were meant to. They are not loaded with anything in particular; they just sit there, and the camera lets them.

The film opens at sundown and closes at dawn. The room is the same room it started in.
