The multiverse did something permanent to Spider-Man: it turned a single character into a franchise of interchangeable masks, and it made the person behind the mask a matter of scheduling rather than fate. Kevin Feige‘s latest remarks confirm that Marvel now plans the role as a relay — and that Miles Morales is the designated next runner. What Feige cannot yet control is the exchange of the baton, because that timing belongs to another studio.

As Deadline relayed, the Marvel Studios chief was unusually direct about intent. “But yes, we definitely have plans” for a live-action Miles, he said, framing the character’s arrival as a question of when rather than if. He went further on the shape of the slate, explaining that he and producer Amy Pascal have already held “in-depth discussions about what the next two, three, four, and five Spider-Man movies might be about.” That is not the language of a vague wish; it is a studio mapping a decade.

The confidence runs straight into a corporate wall. Sony owns the film rights that make the animated Spider-Verse possible, and it has told Marvel to stay away from a live-action Miles while its own version is still swinging. Feige’s hands are effectively tied until Sony’s trilogy closes — a rare case of the most powerful producer in blockbuster cinema waiting on a competitor’s release schedule rather than setting his own.

The caution is proportional to the prize. Miles Morales, created in 2011 and pushed into the mainstream by 2018’s Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse and its 2023 sequel, is the most valuable new Spider-Man of the century, and a live-action debut would make him the first Afro-Latino lead to carry the mask on screen. For Marvel he is also the cleanest route to a generational handoff from Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker, whose own arc is running down. Two studios, one character, and a succession plan neither can execute alone.

The gate is a date. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the animated trilogy’s finale, is set for June 18, 2027, and nothing live-action moves before it clears the runway. Marvel has, by Feige’s own account, already drawn up five films of Spider-Man future. The one character it wants most remains, for now, Sony’s to release.
