Resurrection is not just the title of Showtime’s latest Dexter chapter — it is the franchise’s entire operating principle. Michael C. Hall’s serial killer has already survived a faked death, a canceled ending and a New Blood bullet, and the series keeps proving that in this universe no exit is ever final. So when set photos placed David Zayas back on a Dexter call sheet, the surprise was not that a beloved character could return, but how quickly the show was willing to undo its own most wrenching goodbye.

As Deadline first reported, Zayas is coming back as Angel Batista for the second season of Dexter: Resurrection, sources confirmed after the actor was spotted shooting alongside Hall in Times Square. The catch is that Batista is, by every metric the first season established, dead: León Prater executed him in the penultimate episode, and Dexter Morgan spent the finale taking his revenge on Prater’s own table. How the show intends to fold Zayas back into the story has not been revealed.

That reticence is the point. Batista is one of the last surviving threads connecting Resurrection to the original 2006-2013 run, a Miami Metro fixture whose loyalty and blind spots helped make Dexter’s double life possible across eight seasons. Killing him was the first season’s clearest signal that this revival would carry real stakes; bringing Zayas back weeks later is a reminder that the franchise’s most valuable asset is not plot permanence but the audience’s attachment to the faces it grew up with.

Showtime has leaned on that attachment before. The network revived the property with New Blood, mined its beginnings with the Original Sin prequel, and built Resurrection around Hall’s own comeback — each move trading narrative closure for the comfort of a familiar name. Restoring Batista, dead or not, extends the same bet: an expanding Dexter universe that grows by revisiting its own history rather than risking wholly new ground.

Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, again overseen by showrunner Clyde Phillips, is set to premiere in October 2026 on Paramount+ with Showtime, with a serial killer modeled on the New York Ripper positioned as its central threat. Whether Batista turns up in flashback, in memory or through some other device, the production has kept his mechanism firmly under wraps.

For now the only evidence is a man in a fedora and a loud shirt standing in Times Square — a ghost of old Miami, wandering the wrong city, refusing to stay buried.
