Betty McGuire, the actress who played grandmother Kate Malone on Growing Pains, has died, and most of the obituaries have filed her under that single recurring part. It is the role sitcom audiences remember: Maggie Seaver’s mother, turning up at the Seaver house a handful of times a season. It is also the least revealing thing about her.

Read the whole career and a different figure appears. McGuire came out of the golden-age Broadway musical, where she performed and understudied beside its biggest stars, and she carried that training into decades of television. A family-sitcom grandmother played by a woman who had shared a stage with Ethel Merman is a lineage worth naming. And the coda of her life, as The Hollywood Reporter tells it, is about the most generous use of a microphone a working actor could make.

From Ethel Merman’s stage to the Seaver living room

McGuire made her Broadway debut as Rebecca in Plain and Fancy, then appeared in the original productions of Happy Hunting and Oh, Captain!, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. Across those three shows she worked, and understudied, alongside Ethel Merman, Barbara Cook, Bea Arthur and Tony Randall.

Then came the road. She headlined Mame at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and toured in Gypsy, Auntie Mame, Oliver!, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and The Ziegfeld Follies of 1956. THR lists her touring co-stars as Tallulah Bankhead, Celeste Holm, Susan Hayward, Constance Bennett, Jane Russell and Ron Moody, a roll call that reads like a history of mid-century American showbusiness.

That is a trouper’s apprenticeship, and it explains the screen career that followed. After her debut on The Doris Day Show she became one of the faces television leaned on for decades: Columbo, Charlie’s Angels, Little House on the Prairie, Hill Street Blues, Moonlighting, St. Elsewhere, Falcon Crest, Murphy Brown, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, ER, 7th Heaven. In film she was Sister Mary Quacker in Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke and a nurse in Michael Crichton’s Coma, and she turned up in The Incredible Shrinking Woman and Wishmaster.

Kate Malone, the grandmother who kept coming back to ‘Growing Pains’

On Growing Pains, McGuire played Kate Malone, mother to Joanna Kerns’ Maggie, with Gordon Jump as her husband, Ed. The Hollywood Reporter counts 12 episodes between 1986 and 1991, a presence in all but one of the ABC comedy’s seven seasons; Variety places her in seasons one and two, then four through seven.

The visiting grandparent is one of the oldest devices in the family sitcom: the relative who drops in, unsettles the house and leaves. McGuire brought to it the timing of someone trained in the wings beside Merman, and Kate Malone kept being written back in for six seasons.

The talk show where the staff were the guests

The detail most obituaries rush past is the one that best explains her. McGuire lived at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s retirement community in Woodland Hills, California, from 2017. There she hosted and produced her own talk show, GabFest, for Channel 22, the campus TV station. Surrounded by retired film and television people, she could have booked famous neighbours every week. Instead, THR reports, she gave the airtime to the staff who worked there, and to their dreams and life stories.

She appeared in an NBC Nightly News piece profiling the home in 2019. “I’m a happy camper,” she said in the segment. “To have the chance to do new things and different things at 92, can you think of anything better? I can’t.”

Away from any camera, she spent years volunteering as a receptionist and advocate at the Coalition for Economic Survival, a Los Angeles legal clinic that supports low-income tenants fighting eviction.

McGuire died of natural causes on October 8 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills. Keith Gerchak, an actor, co-founder of Double G Films and a close family friend who held her power of attorney, confirmed the death. THR gives her birth date as March 20, 1926, in Bridgeport, Connecticut; an early report that put her birth in 1933 does not square with her age.

She spent seven decades sharing stages with stars. Given a show of her own late in life, she booked the staff.
