Endgame Encore’s 77M-view trailer isn’t nostalgia — it’s Marvel’s Doomsday launchpad

The Hollywood re-release used to be a nostalgia play — a studio dusting off a beloved title for an anniversary lap and a few respectful headlines. Marvel has quietly rewired the format into something far more useful: a distribution channel for whatever it needs to sell next. The proof is a trailer for Avengers: Endgame Encore that behaved less like a memory and more like a launch, outpacing every re-release teaser before it by a margin no marketing department had dared to model.

As Deadline first reported, the Encore trailer pulled 77 million views in its first 24 hours — more than four times the previous record for a re-release trailer. The scale of that gap is the story: Paramount’s Top Gun re-release trailer, the reigning champion, managed 19 million, while James Cameron’s returns of Avatar and Titanic drew 14 and 13 million respectively. Endgame did not nudge the record ahead. It lapped the entire field.

The frenzy, though, is not really about 2019. It is about December. The Encore cut is directly tied to Avengers: Doomsday, and the theatrical run bundles an exclusive first look at that film alongside remastered IMAX and Infinity Vision presentations. Marvel is selling a ticket to a movie audiences have already seen and using it to hand-deliver a commercial for one they have not — turning its most emotionally loaded property into the delivery system for a tentpole still months away.

That reframes the whole exercise. Joe Russo, returning with brother Anthony to direct Doomsday, has called the re-release “an important viewing experience ahead of the next Marvel Studios movie” — studio shorthand for required reading. After a stretch in which Marvel’s theatrical instincts looked shaky, the play is to convert affection into pre-awareness, cashing a 2019 high while priming the 2026 event. The 77-million-view figure is the proof of concept, and much of that appetite was plainly for Doomsday footage rather than for Endgame itself.

There is a competitive edge to the timing, too. Endgame reigned as the second-highest-grossing film in domestic history until Spider-Man: Brand New Day knocked it down a rung this summer, so the Encore run doubles as a chance to reclaim a sliver of box-office pride. Avengers: Endgame Encore returns to theaters on September 25, with Avengers: Doomsday set to open December 18.

Six years ago, Endgame’s first trailer set an all-time record of 289 million views in a single day. Marvel is now betting that the same audience will pay, once more, to watch an ending it already knows by heart — this time as the opening act for the beginning of something else.
