Amazon MGM’s problem in the awards race has never been ambition or money — it has been conversion, turning prestige acquisitions into the kind of theatrical runs that end at a podium. The studio’s answer is a calendar move as loud as any casting announcement: it has handed Ron Howard’s true-life military drama ‘Alone at Dawn’ the Christmas-to-January release lane that Hollywood reserves for pictures it intends to campaign, not merely release.

The film reunites two of the more restless actors of their generation. Adam Driver plays Master Sergeant John A. Chapman, the Air Force Combat Controller killed in Afghanistan, while Anne Hathaway plays the intelligence officer who later reconstructs his final hours to argue that his actions merit the Medal of Honor. As Deadline first reported, the Amazon MGM Studios release is produced with Brian Grazer and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment, from a screenplay by Michael Russell Gunn adapting the 2019 book by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz.

It is unmistakably Howard territory. From ‘Apollo 13’ to ‘Thirteen Lives,’ he has built a late career on procedural heroism — competent people improvising under impossible pressure — and Chapman’s story fits the mold and then complicates it. Chapman died at the Battle of Takur Ghar and received a posthumous Medal of Honor in 2018, the first airman so honored since Vietnam. By splitting the film between the battlefield and the officer litigating his legacy, Howard turns a valor tale into an argument about how valor gets recognized — a frame the project acquired only after it evolved from the Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle once titled ‘Combat Control.’

The release strategy is the tell. A platform bow at Christmas followed by a wide break over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is the exact path ‘American Sniper’ rode from a limited December debut to a record-breaking January, and it is no accident Amazon MGM is copying the map. A patriotic, four-quadrant prestige drama with two Oscar-caliber leads is precisely the kind of title that can satisfy awards voters in December and multiplex crowds a month later — the double duty every studio wants and few films deliver.

‘Alone at Dawn’ begins its platform release on December 25, 2027, expands on January 7, 2028, and goes wide over the MLK weekend of January 14-17. Howard shot the film between Maryland and Budapest, wrapping in February 2026, with Salvatore Totino behind the camera and a supporting cast that includes Betty Gilpin, Jon Bass, Rohan Campbell, Devon Bostick and Austin Amelio.

Whether the corridor still works the way it did in 2015 is the real question. Amazon MGM has bought its way to the starting line before; this time it is betting a fallen airman’s story can carry it the rest of the way — from a streamer’s release schedule to a place it has rarely reached, the Oscar stage.
