Collision”: A Thrilling Descent into Moral Ambiguity

Martin Cid Magazine

The opening shot of “Collision” (2022), directed by Fabien Martorell, lingers on a shattered wine glass, its fractures spreading like spiderwebs—a silent yet ominous prelude to the chaos that unfolds over the course of this thriller. The film follows corrupt businessman Johan Greser (Langley Kirkwood) and his socialite wife Diane (Tessa Jubber) as they scramble to rescue their daughter from a notorious crime lord, all within the confines of a single, fateful day.

Martorell’s direction is ambitious, weaving together suspense, irony, and emotional turmoil with an unconventional narrative structure. The film’s strength lies in its ability to maintain tension through a series of interconnected events that build upon each other, creating a sense of inevitability and dread. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the audience to absorb the complexity of the characters’ motivations and the high stakes they face. The cinematography is particularly noteworthy, with Martorell employing tight close-ups and dynamic camera movements to heighten the sense of urgency and claustrophobia.

The performances are a mixed bag. Langley Kirkwood delivers a compelling portrayal of Johan Greser, capturing the desperation and moral ambiguity of his character with nuance. Tessa Jubber as Diane Greser is equally impressive, bringing a layer of sophistication and vulnerability to her role. However, some supporting actors, such as Bonko Khoza as Larry and Mpho Sebeng as Thando, feel underutilized, their characters serving more as plot devices than fully realized individuals.

Where “Collision” falters is in its execution of the myriad subplots and character arcs. The film’s ambition to tackle multiple storylines simultaneously leads to a cluttered narrative that sometimes feels overwhelming. Certain scenes drag on without clear purpose, and the resolution of some conflicts feels rushed or unsatisfying. Additionally, the film’s attempt to blend thriller, crime, and drama genres results in a tonal inconsistency that can be jarring.

Despite these flaws, “Collision” is a bold and engaging film that dares to take risks. It challenges the audience with its complex storytelling and emotional depth, even if it doesn’t always succeed in tying up all its loose ends.
