October Prime Day Apple Deals Mostly Undo Apple’s Summer Price Hikes

Amazon’s MacBook Air discount lands exactly on the price Apple charged before June. The cuts that are actually new sit on the Apple Watch and AirPods.

Amazon’s autumn Prime sale has made Apple’s laptops cheaper again, in a narrow sense. The headline MacBook Air discounts land almost exactly where Apple’s own price list sat before the company raised it in the summer. Against today’s sticker, that is real money saved. Against the price a buyer could have paid in spring, it is close to nothing.

The deal roundups treat the sale as a rare Apple markdown. Read product by product, it splits three ways: some deals only hand back what Apple took, a few fall short even of that, and the genuine cuts sit in the two lines Apple never repriced, the Apple Watch and AirPods.

What Apple took in June

Apple raised prices across most of its Mac and iPad range on June 25. The 13-inch MacBook Air went from $1,099 to $1,299 and the 15-inch from $1,299 to $1,499. The 11-inch iPad Air rose from $599 to $749, the iPad mini from $499 to $599, according to the price lists MacRumors and 9to5Mac compiled that day. Tim Cook blamed memory and storage chips, squeezed by demand for AI servers, and said the situation had “become unsustainable.” The iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods kept their prices.

MacBook Air and iPad: back to spring, roughly

Amazon is taking $200 off nearly every M5 MacBook Air. The 13-inch model with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage drops to $1,099, and the 15-inch equivalent to $1,299. Those are the pre-increase list prices to the dollar. MacPrices says it plainly: the Prime Day prices effectively wipe out Apple’s increase. MacRumors calls them the best prices since the summer hikes, which is accurate and the same observation seen from the other side.

The iPad mini follows the same pattern, back to $499 for 128GB. The iPad Air does not quite get there. The 11-inch model with 128GB falls $100 to $649, still $50 above its pre-hike price, and the 13-inch at $849 remains $100 above where Apple had it. Best Buy is matching the iPad Air prices, MacRumors reports.

The MacBook Pro splits. The base 14-inch M5 with 1TB is $1,839, which is $160 off and still $140 above the old $1,699. At the top of the range, the 14-inch M5 Max with 2TB is cut $600 to $3,499, which lands $100 under its pre-hike price. The MacBook Neo, Apple’s cheapest laptop, barely moves: $690 for 256GB, against a $699 list price that was $599 before June, per Macworld.

Where the discount is real

The Apple Watch and AirPods were left out of the repricing, so their cuts are cuts. The Series 12 is $349.99 in 42mm GPS, down from $399, and $399.99 in 46mm, down from $449, both new all-time lows by MacRumors’ tracking. The Ultra 4 drops $99 to $699.99, though only in the Natural finish with the Translucent Gray Ocean Band. The Watch SE 3 is $199, and AirPods Pro 3 are $179, $70 under a list price that has not moved.

NBC News’ shopping desk sets its own bar for Apple at 20 percent off, on the grounds that Apple products rarely go on sale. The AirPods Pro 3 and the Watch SE 3 clear it. The Series 12 does not, but its discount comes off a price Apple never raised, which is more than most of the Mac and iPad deals can claim.

When the sale runs, and who can use it

Prime Big Deal Days runs October 6 and 7 in 22 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, Brazil and Japan, and is limited to Prime members ($14.99 a month or $139 a year). Amazon adds new offers three times a day, at midnight, 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Pacific. The prices above are US Amazon listings and can change within hours. Amazon’s shopping assistant now shows up to 365 days of price history, enough to reach back past the June increase.

For a buyer who needs a laptop now, the M5 Air at its old price is the cleanest call, and Macworld calls it particularly easy to recommend. MacBook Pro buyers face a harder decision: Macworld notes the rumored touchscreen models.

The number to keep is $1,099. It was the MacBook Air’s list price in spring and it is the Prime Day price now, so any Black Friday deal has to go below it before it is a discount on anything other than Apple’s own increase.
