Rodolfo Salas, the man audiences love to watch lie to them

There is something almost structurally perverse about Rodolfo Salas’s rise. The characters he plays best are the ones audiences have every reason to walk away from: the scheming antagonist, the charming liar, the man who hurts the woman he claims to love and then spends two seasons trying to win her back. In Fake Profile, Netflix’s Colombian erotic thriller that ran three seasons across 2023 and 2026, he played Miguel Estévez with the kind of precision that makes you understand why a character’s manipulations work. You see the mechanism and you stay in your seat. That is harder than playing a hero.

He was born in 1983 in Maracaibo, Venezuela, the city on Lake Maracaibo whose oil-fuelled cultural life produced a specific kind of ambition — the kind that requires emigrating to find a stage large enough. He began acting in Venezuelan productions in 2009, learning the grammar of telenovela pacing and physical performance. By 2014 he had relocated to the United States, joining the Telemundo roster in Miami and entering the factory of Spanish-language prime-time drama that runs roughly between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. every weeknight.

His early US roles were supporting parts that let him establish the physical presence the genre demands. He appeared in La fan in 2017 and played Ricky in Mariposa de barrio, Jenni Rivera’s authorized biographical series, before landing Daniel Valencia in Betty en NY in 2019 — an antagonist role in the Telemundo remake of Yo soy Betty la fea, the Colombian telenovela that spawned more international adaptations than any other. Daniel Valencia was not a complicated part; he was designed to be the obstacle. Salas made him specific enough that the obstacle read as a person.

The role that changed the scale of the game was Fake Profile. Produced in Colombia for Netflix, the series occupies the niche that the platform has aggressively cultivated since 2022: Spanish-language erotic content that performs well globally precisely because it doesn’t have to appeal to any single national taste. Fake Profile ran three full seasons, with the third and final installment premiering in April 2026. For that stretch, Miguel Estévez — a man who creates a false identity to seduce a woman and then, across two more seasons, attempts something that functions like redemption — became one of the most-watched characters in Latin streaming. The show’s audience was not watching ironically.

It is worth staying with the critical question the career raises. Salas’s most prominent roles require him to be convincingly harmful — but the telenovela and streaming-thriller genres, in their current Latin iteration, have come under scrutiny for how they frame harmful male behavior as romantically redeemable. Fake Profile’s narrative arc involves a character who deceives, causes documented harm, and is then granted a second season’s worth of attempted recovery. Whether this constitutes a character study or a template is a reasonable debate the show itself largely avoids having. Salas does not have to answer for the writing, but his effectiveness in the role is part of why the question gets raised at all.

Outside the telenovela universe, there is a second Rodolfo Salas that the fan coverage tends to underweigh: the CrossFit competitor who founded CoreMotif, a training center in Sweden. The combination — a man who plays morally flexible characters on camera and runs a physical discipline gym in Stockholm — is not incidental biographical color. It tells you something about how he manages the gap between the work and the life. The body in telenovela is always partly performance, and the difference between Salas the actor and Salas the CrossFit evangelist is that one version of physical discipline is visible to thirty million streaming viewers and the other is its own project entirely.

In 2024 and 2025 he maintained the parallel careers he had built: Roberto León in Sed de venganza across 71 episodes on Telemundo, Marco Cafiero in Velvet: el nuevo imperio for Telemundo, and work in two films — Padres and Doble traición. The volume is notable. Salas is not an actor who waits between projects.

His current project in 2026 is Guardian of My Life (Guardián de mi vida), the TelevisaUnivision telenovela that premiered on Univision in May 2026, starring Silvia Navarro and Daniel Arenas. He plays Uriel Bolero. The project brings him back to the TelevisaUnivision machine — a different register from the Netflix model, with a different audience expectation, which is another way of saying that Salas is still testing the range of genres that will take him.
