Chris Kattan and Horatio Sanz bring Concert Heroes to Comic-Con with a comedy that puts the fans on stage

An indie comedy with no franchise, no studio and no pre-sold intellectual property behind it has talked its way into one of San Diego Comic-Con’s bigger rooms. Concert Heroes premieres its trailer at the Indigo Ballroom of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront — the venue that sits next door to Hall H — with a panel built around a cast that reads like a syllabus of Saturday Night Live and nineties comedy.

Leading it are Chris Kattan, of SNL and A Night at the Roxbury, and Joseph A. Nunez, of Superbad, who also directs. It is Nunez’s first feature behind the camera. The film was shot in San Diego, which is part of why the panel carries the hometown charge a convention crowd tends to reward.

The premise is a joke about documentary crews as much as about rock. Two filmmaker friends are hired to shoot a classic rock band coming home for a farewell tour, and end up caught between eccentric superfans, backstage chaos and a rival working against them. The film states its own thesis without much subtlety: the real rock stars are the ones facing the stage, not standing on it.

That thesis is also the most honest explanation for why a film this size ends up on a Comic-Con stage at all. A convention panel is the one venue where the audience is the story — where being a fan is the qualification, not the consolation prize. A comedy about superfans playing to a ballroom of them is either very shrewd programming or a very lucky fit.

A cast assembled from three decades of television

The ensemble is the pitch. E.G. Daily — Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, and the voice of Tommy Pickles — appears alongside Horatio Sanz of Saturday Night Live, David DeLuise of Wizards of Waverly Place, Ken Davitian of Borat, Eddie McClintock of Warehouse 13, Robert Romanus of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Carolyn Hennesy of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Ryan Ochoa of iCarly and Josh Sussman of Glee.

They are joined by Gleb Savchenko, Maria Libri, Richard Cotovsky, Rasika Mathur, Chad Wolf, Rudy Quintanilla, Randy Davison, Brooke McCormick and Mark Atkinson. It is a long list, and that length is the point: the film is built out of faces an audience recognises before it can name them, which is exactly how nostalgia casting works when it works.

What happens at the panel

The session runs on July 25 and is moderated by Atkinson, who also appears in the film. Beyond the trailer, the panel promises exclusive clips and behind-the-scenes stories from Kattan, Sanz, Nunez, Hennesy, Daily, Ochoa, McClintock and Romanus. Chad Wolf, of the pop-rock band Carolina Liar — the group featured in the film, produced by Max Martin — performs live.

Writer-producer Steven Mark, who wrote the script with his brother Robert Weinberger, frames the film as a two-way tribute. “It’s a comedic celebration for filmmakers and concert goers alike,” he says. “The real rock stars are often the fans in front of the stage.” He calls the invitation to present in one of the convention’s biggest venues, in his hometown, the part that still surprises him.

Nunez, for his part, did not expect to be running the set. “When first approached to read Concert Heroes, I assumed it was to play a role,” he says. “But when asked to direct this feature film, it would be a first for me. Directing opened a world of challenge and possibility — not just in the creative process, but in the joy of working with comedic peers and comedy icons.” He calls acting, producing and directing the film the greatest professional experience of his life.

Mark’s previous feature, The Samuel Project, reached theatres in 2018 with Hal Linden, Ryan Ochoa, Ken Davitian, Mateo Arias and Liza Lapira. Concert Heroes is the bigger swing: a comedy that arrives at the largest fan gathering in the calendar carrying the argument that the fans were the main act all along.
