‘Jeanne Du Barry’ (2023) Movie Review: A lot of pomp and beautiful visuals, but it falls flat in its narrative

Jeanne du Barry directed by Maiwenn and starring herself and Johnny Depp, takes us back to the France of Louis XV. This time around it follows the story of a young woman who rose to the highest echelon of the nobility of the time. Pacts, passion, scandals… all the necessary ingredients for a good story set in the French 18th century and the famous court of Versailles.

“Jeanne Du Barry” brings Johnny Deep back to the screen, all personal judgments aside, and in this historical drama, which is starred, written, and directed by Maïwenn.

If you don’t like it, you know who to blame.

It’s one of those grandiose films that showcase elaborate costumes and the splendor of a particular era. Does it achieve what it aims for? Does it engross us as viewers? To a certain extent, although it would have been nice if it had also tried to entertain us beyond just depicting the time period.

Do you remember Barry Lyndon? Perhaps Kubrick’s least celebrated film in which Kubrick himself seems less like his usual self. “Jeanne Du Barry” has a similar structure and intentions, and like that film, it hasn’t been well received by critics, who have labeled it as pompous, insipid, and many other adjectives commonly associated with these period dramas about the French aristocracy.

Maybe Versailles is too impressive, and these palace stories don’t lend themselves to truly interesting storytelling (they managed to do it in a 2018 film called “The Favourite”), or maybe they do, but we have to agree with the critics and say that “Jeanne Du Barry” doesn’t convince or entertain with its story, and it merely offers good aesthetics and a convincing historical portrayal of pre-revolutionary France.

Johnny Depp doesn’t help either; he’s not particularly brilliant in this part, and seems to be there solely to boost the film’s commercial appeal with his name, and speaking his French.

The story of the main couple dissipates; it simply doesn’t fully develop in a screenplay that also doesn’t work in a film that, beyond its aesthetics, doesn’t seem to want to tell a compelling story.

Our Opinion

A film that fails to stand out or transport us to the tragic love story it intends to portray, remaining on the surface of visually stunning landscapes and Versailles architecture.

Jeanne du Barry – Die Favoritin des Königs, unter der Regie von Maiwenn und mit ihr selbst und Johnny Depp in den Hauptrollen, führt uns zurück in das Frankreich von Ludwig XV. Diesmal geht es um die Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die in die höchsten Ränge des damaligen Adels aufsteigt. Pakte, Leidenschaft, Skandale… alles notwendige Zutaten für eine gute Geschichte, die im französischen 18. Jahrhundert und am berühmten Hof von Versailles spielt.

“Jeanne du Barry – Die Favoritin des Königs” rückt Johnny Depp wieder ins Rampenlicht, ohne persönliche Erlebnisse. Ein historisches Drama, das von Maïwenn selbst geschrieben und inszeniert wird.

Wenn es Ihnen nicht gefällt, dann sollten Sie wissen, wie die Schuld beglichen werden kann.

Dies ist einer der wichtigsten Filme, in denen die Kostüme und der Fokus auf den Hintergrund und eine Zeitperiode dargestellt werden.

Erreicht er, was er beabsichtigt? Auf jeden Fall, obwohl wir uns gewünscht hätten, dass er auch uns auch über die Beschreibung der Zeit hinaus unterhalten hätte.

Vielleicht Kubricks berühmtester Film, in dem Kubrick am berühmtesten ist, wie er selbst aussieht. “Jeanne du Barry – Die Favoritin des Königs” hat eine analoge Struktur und Absurdität, und wie schon in einem einzigen Film kam dies auch bei den Kritikern nicht gut an, die ihn als prosaisch, bizarr und mit all den anderen Adjektiven, die für diese Art von historischem Drama über die französische Front jener Zeit verwendet wurden, beschrieben.

Vielleicht beeindruckt Versailles zu sehr und diese Geschichten über den Palast bieten nicht genug, um uns eine wirklich interessante Geschichte zu erzählen (das gelang ihnen in einem Film von 2018 mit dem Titel “The Favourite”), oder vielleicht doch, aber wir müssen den Kritikern zustimmen und sagen, dass “Jeanne du Barry – Die Favoritin des Königs” weder überzeugt noch unterhält und sich darauf beschränkt, uns ein gutes ästhetisches und historisches Porträt des vorrevolutionären Frankreichs zu bieten.

Johnny Depp ist nicht besonders helle und scheint nur in der Lage zu sein, seinen Namen zu benutzen und dem Film kommerziellen Erfolg zu bringen, der ohne das Marketing von Depp, der französisch spricht, wahrscheinlich nicht die gleiche Resonanz gehabt hätte.

Die Geschichte des alten Mannes passt einfach nicht in eine Geschichte, die nicht in einem Film funktioniert, der trotz seiner Ästhetik keine ausreichend interessante Geschichte enthält.

Ein Film, der weder herausragt noch uns in diese Liebestragödie hineinzieht, sondern sich die ganze Zeit über auf der Oberfläche von (wunderschönen, das muss gesagt werden) Versailler Landschaften und Architekturen bewegt.

Jeanne du Barry – La favorita del Re, diretto da Maiwenn e interpretato da lei stessa e da Johnny Depp, ci riporta nella Francia di Luigi XV. Questa volta segue la storia di una giovane donna che sale ai vertici della nobiltà dell’epoca. Patti, passione, scandali… tutti gli ingredienti necessari per una buona storia ambientata nel XVIII secolo francese e nella famosa corte di Versailles.

“Jeanne du Barry – La favorita del Re” ci riporta Johnny Depp sullo schermo al di là dei giudizi personali. Un dramma storico interpretato, scritto e diretto da Maïwenn.
Se non ti piace, ora sai a chi dare la colpa.

Uno di quei film pomposi in cui spiccano i costumi, il fasto e che ritrae un’epoca.

Riesce a raggiungere ciò che si propone? Certamente, anche se avremmo voluto che avesse cercato di intrattenerci anche al di là della descrizione dell’epoca.

Recensione del film

Vi ricordate Barry Lyndon? Forse il film meno celebrato di Kubrick, in cui Kubrick sembra essere meno se stesso. “Jeanne du Barry – La favorita del Re” ha una struttura e intenzioni simili e, come accadde con quel film, nemmeno questo è stato ben accolto dalla critica, che lo ha definito pomposo, insipido e con qualsiasi altro aggettivo solitamente riferito a tutti questi drammi d’epoca sulla nobiltà francese dell’epoca.

Forse Versailles impressiona troppo e queste storie di corte non sono sufficienti per raccontarci una storia veramente interessante (ci sono riusciti in un film del 2018 intitolato “The Favourite”), o forse sì, ma dobbiamo concordare con le critiche e dirvi che “Jeanne du Barry – La favorita del Re” non convince né intrattiene nella sua trama, limitandosi a offrirci un ritratto estetico e storico della Francia prerivoluzionaria.

Non aiuta Johnny Depp, che non è particolarmente brillante e sembra essere lì solo per mettere il suo nome e dare un impulso commerciale al film che, probabilmente, non avrebbe avuto la stessa risonanza senza il marketing di Depp che parla in francese.

La storia della coppia protagonista si dissolve, semplicemente non riesce a prendere forma in una sceneggiatura che non funziona nemmeno in un film che, al di là della sua estetica, non sembra voler raccontare una storia abbastanza interessante.

Un film che non riesce a distinguersi né a coinvolgerci nella tragedia d’amore che cerca di rappresentare, rimanendo sempre in superficie di paesaggi (seppur bellissimi) e architetture versagliesi.

De data aceasta, urmărește povestea unei tinere care a ajuns în cel mai înalt eșalon al nobilimii vremii. Pacte, pasiune, scandaluri… toate ingredientele necesare unei povești bune plasate în secolul al XVIII-lea francez și la celebra curte de la Versailles.

“Jeanne du Barry” îl readuce pe Johnny Depp pe ecran dincolo de judecățile personale. O dramă istorică în care joacă, scrie și regizează Maïwenn.
Dacă nu vă place, știți pe cine să dați vina.

Unul dintre acele filme pompoase care pun în valoare costume și grandoare, portretizând o epocă.

Reușește oare să atingă ceea ce își propune? Cu siguranță, deși ne-am fi dorit să încerce să ne distreze și dincolo de descrierea epocii.

Vă mai amintiți de Barry Lyndon? Poate cel mai puțin celebru film al lui Kubrick, în care Kubrick seamănă cel mai puțin cu el însuși. “Jeanne du Barry” are o structură și intenții asemănătoare și, la fel ca acel film, nu a fost bine primit de critici, care l-au numit pompos, insipid și alte adjective asociate de obicei cu aceste drame de epocă despre aristocrația franceză a vremii.

Poate că Versailles impresionează prea mult, iar aceste povești de palat nu oferă suficientă substanță pentru o narațiune cu adevărat interesantă (au reușit acest lucru într-un film din 2018 intitulat “The Favourite”), sau poate că da, dar trebuie să le dăm dreptate criticilor și să vă spunem că “Jeanne du Barry” nu convinge și nu distrează prin povestea sa, oferindu-ne pur și simplu un portret estetic și istoric bun al Franței prerevoluționare.

Nici Johnny Depp nu ajută, pentru că nu este deosebit de strălucitor și pare să fie acolo doar pentru a-și împrumuta numele și a da atractivitate comercială filmului, care probabil că nu ar fi avut același impact fără marketingul francofon al lui Depp.
