“The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” is a 40-minute movie directed by Wes Anderson, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, with Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade.

If you are not familiar with Wes Anderson, a cult director if there ever was one, this is a great opportunity to be captivated by his unique way of making films. If you adore him, it’s another chance to love him even more. If you detest him, then run away as fast as you can.

And if you find yourself in that situation where you want to discover a new facet of this director, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” is not the most original work in his career, as it explores and repeats the successes of other films like the recent “Asteroid City”.

Same aesthetic with equally aesthetic results in a medium-length film that lasts only 40 minutes.

However, if you find this filmmaker a bit tiresome, this film has the perfect running time, as it will not come across as overwhelming.

Synopsis

A wealthy man who goes by the name of Henry Sugar, and happens to be an avid gambler, learns of a spiritual teacher who possesses an exceptional, the ability to see despite having his eyes bandaged. Driven by a desire to gain an unfair advantage in gambling, this rich individual sets out on a quest to acquire this distinctive ability.

Review of “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”

More of the same from Wes Anderson: multiple characters narrating a story that is tad bit eccentric, more or less charming, and that, without offending anyone, focuses on an elaborate production to delight us with a number of meta jokes (i.e. film related jokes).

An exceptional cast, as usual, for a far-fetched story that, in the style of a vaudeville, changes narrators and adapts a Roald Dahl tale to Wes Anderson’s peculiar style, which seems to suggest that whether Roald Dahl had written the script or if it had been an adaptation of S. King’s “The Shining,” both films would end up resembling “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.

Either way, it is difficult not to try to repeat successes and, above all, for an acclaimed director not to resemble himself too much. Wes Anderson, like his cast, is brilliant in his style, production, and aesthetic formulation.

“The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” is another example (among many) of this.

“La maravillosa historia de Henry Sugar” es una película de 40 minutos dirigida por Wes Anderson. Está protagonizada por Benedict Cumberbatch, con Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend y Richard Ayoade.

Si no conocen a Wes Anderson, director de culto donde los haya, ésta es una buena ocasión para prendaros de su estética manera de hacer cine; si lo adoráis, es una ocasión más para amarle; si lo detestáis, huid despavoridamente.

Y si estáis en ese caso en el que queréis descubrir una nueva faceta de este director, “La maravillosa historia de Henry Sugar” no es lo más original de su carrera, ya que ahonda y repite aciertos de otras películas como la reciente “Asteroid City”.

Misma estética con idénticos muy estéticos resultados en un mediometraje de apenas 40 minutos de duración.

Eso sí, si os parece un poco cansino este realizador, es la duración perfecta, porque como mediometraje es sencillamente perfecto.

Sinopsis

Un hombre adinerado llamado Henry Sugar, ávido jugador, se entera de que un maestro espiritual posee una capacidad excepcional para ver a pesar de tener los ojos vendados. Impulsado por el deseo de obtener una ventaja injusta en el juego, este rico individuo emprende una búsqueda para adquirir esta capacidad distintiva.

Crítica de “La maravillosa historia de Henry Sugar”

Más de lo de siempre de Wes Anderson: varios personajes que narran una historia más o menos excéntrica, más o menos simpática y que, sin meterse con nadie, se centra en una elaboradísima producción para deleitarnos con mil bromas para cinéfilos.

Un reparto excepcional, como viene siendo habitual, para una historia rocambolesca que, a modo de vodevil, cambia de narrador y nos adapta un cuento de Roald Dahl a la peculiar manera de Wes Anderson, que parece que, escriba el guion Roald Dahl o adaptase “The Shinging” de S. King, ambas películas terminarían pareciéndose a “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.

Sea como fuere, es difícil no tratar de repetir los éxitos y, sobre todo y siendo un director aclamado, no parecerse a sí mismo demasiado.

Wes Anderson es, como su reparto, brillante en su estética, producción y formulación estética.

“La maravillosa historia de Henry Sugar” es otro ejemplo (más) de ello.

Si vous ne connaissez pas Wes Anderson, réalisateur culte à part entière, c’est une bonne occasion d’être captivé par sa façon unique de faire des films. Si vous l’adorez, c’est une nouvelle occasion de l’aimer. Si vous le détestez, fuyez vite.

Et si vous êtes dans cette situation où vous voulez découvrir une nouvelle facette de ce réalisateur, “La Merveilleuse Histoire de Henry Sugar” n’est pas l’œuvre la plus originale de sa carrière, puisqu’elle reprend et répète les succès d’autres films comme le récent “Asteroid City”.

Même esthétique avec des résultats tout aussi esthétiques dans un moyen métrage de 40 minutes.

Cependant, si vous trouvez ce cinéaste un peu lassant, c’est la durée idéale, car en tant que moyen métrage, il est tout simplement parfait.

Synopsis

Un homme riche nommé Henry Sugar, joueur invétéré, apprend qu’un professeur spirituel possède une capacité exceptionnelle à voir malgré ses yeux bandés. Poussé par le désir d’obtenir un avantage injuste dans le jeu, ce riche individu se lance dans une quête pour acquérir cette capacité distinctive.

Critique de “La Merveilleuse Histoire de Henry Sugar”

Toujours la même chose chez Wes Anderson : plusieurs personnages qui racontent une histoire plus ou moins excentrique, plus ou moins sympathique qui, sans offenser personne, se concentre sur une mise en scène élaborée pour nous régaler de mille blagues de cinéphiles.

Un casting exceptionnel, comme d’habitude, pour une histoire farfelue qui, à la manière d’un vaudeville, change de narrateur et adapte un conte de Roald Dahl à la manière particulière de Wes Anderson, donnant l’impression que si Roald Dahl écrit le scénario ou s’il adapte “The Shining” de S. King, les deux films finiraient par ressembler à “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.

Quoi qu’il en soit, il est difficile de ne pas chercher à reproduire les succès et surtout, en tant que réalisateur acclamé, de ne pas trop se ressembler.

Wes Anderson, comme ses acteurs, est brillant dans son esthétique, sa production et sa formulation esthétique.

“La Merveilleuse Histoire de Henry Sugar” en est un exemple (de plus).

Mehr vom Gleichen von Wes Anderson: mehrere Charaktere, die eine mehr oder weniger exzentrische, mehr oder weniger sympathische Geschichte erzählen, die sich, ohne jemandem zu nahe zu treten, auf eine aufwendige Inszenierung konzentriert, um uns mit tausend Insider-Witzen für Cineasten zu erfreuen.

Eine außergewöhnliche Besetzung, wie immer, für eine weit hergeholte Geschichte, die wie ein Varieté den Erzähler wechselt und ein Roald Dahl-Märchen an den eigenartigen Stil von Wes Anderson anpasst. Egal, ob Roald Dahl das Drehbuch schreibt oder ob es sich um eine Adaption von S. Kings “The Shining” handelt, beide Filme würden am Ende an “The Grand Budapest Hotel” erinnern.

So oder so ist es schwierig, nicht zu versuchen, Erfolge zu wiederholen, und vor allem als gefeierter Regisseur, sich selbst nicht zu sehr zu ähneln.

Wes Anderson ist, wie seine Darsteller, brillant in seiner Ästhetik, Inszenierung und künstlerischen Formulierung.

“Ich sehe was, was du nicht siehst” ist ein weiteres Beispiel für diese Brillanz.

Se non conoscete Wes Anderson, un regista di culto, questa è un’ottima occasione per apprezzare il suo stile estetico nel fare cinema; se lo adorate, è un’opportunità in più per amarlo; se lo detestate, scappate via velocemente.

E se siete in quel caso in cui volete scoprire un nuovo aspetto di questo regista, “La meravigliosa storia di Henry Sugar” non è la cosa più originale della sua carriera, poiché approfondisce e ripete i successi di altri film come il recente “Asteroid City”.

Un cast eccezionale, come al solito, per una storia rocambolesca che, come un vaudeville, cambia narratore e ci adatta una storia di Roald Dahl al peculiare stile di Wes Anderson. Sembra che, sia che Roald Dahl scriva la sceneggiatura o che adatti “The Shining” di S. King, entrambi i film finirebbero per assomigliare a “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.

In ogni caso, è difficile non cercare di ripetere i successi e, soprattutto, per un regista acclamato, non sembrare troppo simile a se stesso.

Wes Anderson è, come il suo cast, brillante nella sua estetica, produzione e formulazione estetica.

“La meravigliosa storia di Henry Sugar” è un altro esempio di ciò.

Niente di nuovo.

“Minunata povestire a lui Henry Sugar” este un film de 40 de minute regizat de Wes Anderson, cu Benedict Cumberbatch, alături de Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend și Richard Ayoade.

Dacă nu sunteți familiarizați cu Wes Anderson, un regizor cult în sine, aceasta este o ocazie excelentă de a fi captivat de modul său unic de a face film. Dacă îl adorați deja, este o altă șansă de a-l iubi și mai mult. Iar dacă îi detestați stilul, atunci cel mai bine este să vă feriți.

Pentru cei care sunt curioși să exploreze o nouă fațetă a acestui regizor, “Minunata povestire a lui Henry Sugar” s-ar putea să nu fie cea mai originală lucrare din cariera sa, deoarece revizitează și repetă elemente de succes din alte filme precum recentul “Asteroid City”.

Aceeași estetică, cu rezultate la fel de elegante, se regăsește în acest mediu-metraj de 40 de minute.

Cu toate acestea, dacă îl găsiți pe acest cineast un pic obositor, durata este perfectă, deoarece, ca mediu metraj, este pur și simplu impecabil.

Sinopsis

Un om bogat pe nume Henry Sugar, un jucător pasionat de jocuri de noroc, descoperă că un profesor spiritual posedă o capacitate excepțională de a vedea, în ciuda faptului că este legat la ochi. Mânat de dorința de a obține un avantaj nedrept în joc, acest individ bogat pornește în căutarea de a dobândi această abilitate deosebită.

Mai mult din același lucru din partea lui Wes Anderson: mai multe personaje narând o poveste mai mult sau mai puțin excentrică, mai mult sau mai puțin fermecătoare și fără a jigni pe nimeni. Se concentrează pe o producție elaborată care ne încântă cu nenumărate glume cinefile.

O distribuție de excepție, ca de obicei, dă viață acestei povești capricioase, care, în stilul unei farse, schimbă naratorii și adaptează o poveste de Roald Dahl în maniera ciudată a lui Wes Anderson. Se pare că, fie că Roald Dahl ar fi scris scenariul, fie că Anderson ar fi adaptat “The Shining” al lui S. King, ambele filme ar sfârși prin a semăna cu “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.

Cu toate acestea, este o provocare să nu încerci să nu-ți reproduci succesele și, mai ales pentru un regizor aclamat, să nu semeni prea mult cu tine însuți.

『奇才ヘンリー・シュガーの物語』はウェス・アンダーソン監督による40分の映画である。主演のベネディクト・カンバーバッチをはじめ、ラルフ・ファインズ、デヴ・パテル、ベン・キングズレー、ルパート・フレンド、リチャード・アヨードらが出演している。

カルト的な人気を誇るウェス・アンダーソン監督を知らない人は、彼のユニークな映画作りの手法に魅了されるいい機会だ。すでに彼を敬愛しているなら、さらに好きになるチャンスだ。彼の作風が嫌いなら、近づかないのが一番だ。

また、この監督の新たな一面を発見したいのであれば、『奇才ヘンリー・シュガーの物語』は彼のキャリアの中で最も独創的な作品ではない。

40分の中編映画で、同じような美学を持ち、同じような美学的結果を出している。

しかし、この映画監督を少し退屈に感じるのであれば、この上映時間は中編映画として完璧である。

まるで歌劇のように語り手を変え、ロアルド・ダールの物語をウェス・アンダーソン監督独特のスタイルに脚色した奇想天外な物語に、いつも通りの豪華キャスト。ロアルド・ダールが脚本を書こうが、S・キングの『シャイニング』を映画化しようが、どちらの映画も結局は『グランド・ブダペスト・ホテル』に似てしまうようだ。

とはいえ、成功を模倣しようとしないのは難しいし、何より高名な監督である以上、自分と似すぎないようにするのは難しい。

ウェス・アンダーソンは、彼のキャスト同様、その美学、演出、美学的定式化において素晴らしい。

『奇才ヘンリー・シュガーの物語』もその一例だ。
