21세기 대군부인 (21 Segi Daegunbuin / Perfect Crown), the most anticipated Korean drama of the spring season, pairs two of South Korea’s most celebrated performers for the first time in a decade — IU and Byeon Woo-seok — in a modern royal romance that has been generating intense anticipation since casting was confirmed.

The project reunites IU — born Lee Ji-eun, the singer-actress behind global hits and acclaimed dramas including 호텔 델루나 (Hotel del Luna) and 달의 연인 — with Byeon Woo-seok, who became an international phenomenon with 선재 업고 튀어 (Seonjae Eop-go Twieo / Lovely Runner). Their last shared screen credit dates to a period epic in which Byeon had a minor supporting role and IU carried the lead — a connection that has become a recurring talking point among fans counting down to the series.

Perfect Crown is set in a reimagined South Korea operating under a constitutional monarchy. IU plays Seong Hee-ju, the second daughter of the country’s most powerful chaebol family — wealthy and ambitious but blocked from advancement by her commoner status. Byeon Woo-seok plays Grand Prince Yi-an, the king’s second son, publicly beloved but stripped of real influence within the palace. The two are drawn into a contract marriage that neither fully chose, and the series follows what develops as they navigate class, power, and each other.

The project was confirmed by Kakao Entertainment in late 2024 and entered production in mid-2025. It is directed by Park Joon-hwa, whose previous credits include 알케미 오브 소울 (Alkemi obeun Soul / Alchemy of Souls) and 김비서가 왜 그럴까 (Gim Biseo-ga Wae Geureolkka / What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim), and written by Yoo Ji-won. The 12-episode series airs on MBC every Friday and Saturday at 21:40 KST, with simultaneous global streaming on Disney+.

Supporting the leads are Noh Sang-hyun as the Prime Minister, Gong Seung-yeon as a woman born with the destiny of a queen, and Yoo Su-bin and Lee Yeon in key supporting roles. The production originally targeted a second-half 2025 slot before being pushed back after broadcast scheduling conflicts related to the World Baseball Classic.

Perfect Crown carries significant commercial weight for both Kakao Entertainment and Disney+ Asia, which is relying on it as a flagship Korean original for the spring quarter. At the script reading, Byeon Woo-seok told press the team would try to “shake up the world,” while IU said she hoped to make it a fun set — a dynamic that appears to have carried through to the finished product.

The series premiered on MBC and Disney+ on April 10, 2026, with new episodes airing every Friday and Saturday.
