“A Life Too Short: The Isabella Nardoni Case” is a documentary directed by Micael Langer and Cláudio Manoel.

Sao Paolo on March 28th 2008, the young Isabella died. At the tender age of five, she was found on the lawn, severely injured and having fallen from the sixth floor of the building where she and her father lived.

With what I rhetorically say, a blink of an eye the media started to report on the terrible occurrence. And the press started its spectacle, with dozens of journalists showing up, as this was the news exploded: was it a crime or an accident? Who? When? Why? The media frenzy was, although overwhelming to the family, in a way understandable due to the wave of cases of children falling from buildings in the city.

Suspicions and accusations were thrown around, by everybody despite the police conducting an investigation. The girl’s parents were divorced, and Isabella was with her father the weekend the tragedy happened. Was he behind it? Then, suspicion fell on the building’s doorman, but the girl’s mother started investigating on her own when she found blood on the floor. Was it the girl’s blood?

This is this week’s true crime on Netflix. Netflix brings us another perfect example, and this time with extra attention on how the media covered the case triggering the reflection (as in thought) and irony: what is it with the press and media that in real crimes are so voraciously covered? Obviously, audience rates.

Les soupçons se sont portés sur le concierge de l’immeuble, mais la mère de la fillette a commencé à mener sa propre enquête lorsqu’elle a découvert du sang sur le sol. Seguendo esemplarmente la formula predefinita, “Il caso Isabella Nardoni” ci porta nel mondo malato dell’infanticidio in un documentario che sottolinea gli aspetti più oscuri e morbosi del crimine che, inoltre, è diventato un fenomeno mediatico in Brasile.

Una notizia porta all’altra e se la notizia suscita interesse, presto diventerà un fenomeno. È successo per la prima volta con Jack lo Squartatore.

Un documentario che nasce con la lezione ben imparata: non svelare il colpevole fin dall’inizio, creare suspense e utilizzare tutti i trucchi a disposizione. Come se fosse un film thriller, “Il caso Isabella Nardoni” sa giocare con lo spettatore e proporre un nuovo colpevole con ogni indizio, lasciare la suspense nell’aria fino alla fine, abilmente combinare i frammenti di un crimine che si ricostruisce e si crea di nuovo agli occhi dello spettatore.

Come documentario “true crime”, sa portare “il suo gioco” alla perfezione, proprio come i giornalisti che hanno coperto il caso hanno saputo narrare le evoluzioni del caso man mano che le notizie venivano svelate come un romanzo a puntate.

L’omicidio di Isabella de Oliveira Nardoni rimane uno dei casi più noti di infanticidio in Brasile. Tragicamente, la sera del 29 marzo 2008, Isabella, di cinque anni, ha riportato ferite mortali dopo essere stata gettata con la forza dal sesto piano dell’edificio residenziale in cui risiedeva con il padre, Alexandre Alves Nardoni, la matrigna Anna Carolina Jatobá e i fratelli appena nati, nel nord di San Paolo. Le indagini successive hanno rivelato che la bambina era stata sottoposta a maltrattamenti fisici da parte di chi si prendeva cura di lei, portando alla condanna di entrambi gli individui per omicidio intenzionale.

Ca documentar despre o crimă adevărată, filmul își face perfect jocul, așa cum jurnaliștii care au acoperit cazul au povestit evoluțiile pe măsură ce știrile se derulau ca un roman în serie.
