Destiny 2 Unveils Lucasfilm Games Collaboration in Renegades Expansion

Strategic Partnership and Creative Direction

Bungie has formally detailed the contents of Renegades, the forthcoming expansion for Destiny 2 set within the Year of Prophecy, developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. In a dedicated developer presentation, the studio released a launch trailer and a “ViDoc” documentary titled “Making of a Renegade,” outlining this significant creative partnership. This collaboration integrates thematic and aesthetic elements from the Star Wars franchise directly into the Destiny sandbox, establishing a distinct homage to the space opera genre within the game’s existing lore.

The expansion centers on a new, scalable activity designated as the Lawless Frontier, which emphasizes replayability and nonlinear progression. This mode introduces a “Notoriety” reputation system, wherein players must navigate relations with three divergent “Syndicate” factions rather than traditional Vanguard alliances. These factions represent radical departures from the standard enemy archetypes found in the base game. The Pikers are characterized as an anarchist, atheist faction of Eliksni striving to dismantle established social hierarchies. The Tharsis Reformation is comprised of a breakaway sect of Vex who have gained sentience and seek individual identity separate from the collective mind. The third faction, the Totality Division, operates as a rogue element of the Barant Imperium Cabal, functioning as a Mars-based syndicate under the command of Psions.

Arsenal Overhaul and Exotic Weaponry

Guardians engaging in the Lawless Frontier will undertake specific contracts, including smuggling operations to transport goods, bounty hunts targeting high-value assets, and sabotage missions aimed at destabilizing rival infrastructure. These activities utilize expanded cartography across Mars, Europa, and Venus, introducing fresh combat zones and traversal routes. Furthermore, the expansion implements an opt-in “Invasion” mechanic, allowing players to encroach upon the sessions of others to disrupt mission progress for unique rewards. To navigate these challenges, players can deploy “Renegades Abilities,” a customizable suite of offensive and defensive tools designed to alter the traditional rules of engagement.

Renegades institutes a paradigm shift in weapon mechanics with the debut of the “Blaster” archetype, which eschews traditional ammunition magazines in favor of a heat-based management system. The expansion’s arsenal also features “Exotic” gear that serves as a direct stylistic reference to the Star Wars mythos. The marquee addition is the Praxic Blade, a Kinetic Exotic Sword inspired by lightsabers, which offers multiple customization vectors that influence gameplay. Additional equipment includes the Heirloom, a Solar Crossbow modeled after Wookiee weaponry; the Service of Luzaku, a Strand Machine Gun; and class-specific armor such as the Deimosuffusion helmet for Warlocks, Fortune’s Favor legs for Hunters, and the Praxic Vestment chest piece for Titans.

Release Schedule and Commercial Editions

Destiny 2: Renegades is slated for release on December 2, 2025.
