“Love at First Sight” is a 2023 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Vanessa Caswill and starring Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy.

On December 20th, at the notoriously difficult JFK airport in New York, arriving four minutes late doesn’t help matters. Or maybe it does, because thanks to those four minutes, a boy and a girl will meet.

This is a romantic comedy about dates, facts, and statistics.

And speaking of statistics, there will be approximately 1,234 movies that, by chance or not, resemble this one.

Plot

Hadley and Oliver find themselves swept up in an unexpected love story while aboard a flight from New York to London. However, their connection takes an unexpected turn when they lose sight of each other during the customs process. Now faced with daunting odds, will they be able to overcome the challenges and find a way to reunite?

Review of “Love at First Sight”

She is charming, sweet, slightly messy, intelligent, and American. He is charming, sweet, organized, intelligent but sensitive, and English. They bum into each other, at an airport during Christmas, and whatever follows that fortuitous encounter, we won’t reveal.

Are we witnessing yet another formulaic romantic comedy? Yes, it’s hard to avoid that because “Love at First Sight” doesn’t pretend to be anything other than that; one more addition to the romantic comedy genre that, with a touch of drama to give it color, adds to the long list of Christmas rom-coms released now to warm us up to the “fast” approaching holiday season.

It’s not that the genre is bad or that “Love at First Sight” is a bad movie, it’s just that the formula has been used countless times before that once you’ve seen the first two hundred, they cease to surprise you.

However, this movie has the good graces of acknowledging it and, despite that and considering the statistical data, it repeats and denies this data all at once, and curiously, is a film about the possibilities (read: probability) of finding love in this day and age.

Well, that idea is not original either. We have covered a number of movies that apply the same or similar premise.

As far as the technical aspects of the film go, it is precisely here where it stands out, as it is well-crafted, and when Hollywood wants to showcase its technical expertise, it does it wonderfully. “Love at first Sight” counts on good sets, an apt pace tanks to the editing, and ranks quite high in production value (even though it’s reusing an overused premise, it’s true).

The performances are very good, and are as likely to win an Oscar as the movie itself (not likely): the characters are so molded to fit within the genre that they don’t offer much room for performative brilliance. The actors do exactly what is expected of them in a film where everyone expects them to be charming and not much more. But, indeed, charming they are.

Our opinion

A movie that tries its best to be endearing, in a genre that tends to portray life in its most adorable, and tries to make us believe in love. With that said, there is not much novelty in this film, nor does it stand out. Statistically, it will stand at the top of the bell curve – meaning, it remains an average number.

Una comedia romántica sobre fechas, datos y estadísticas.

Y como esto va de estadísticas: habrá como (más o menos) mil doscientas treinta cuatro películas que, por casualidad o no, se parecen a ésta.

Sinopsis

Hadley y Oliver se ven envueltos en una inesperada historia de amor a bordo de un vuelo de Nueva York a Londres. Sin embargo, su conexión da un giro inesperado cuando se pierden de vista durante el proceso de aduana. Enfrentados ahora a enormes dificultades, ¿serán capaces de superar los retos y encontrar la manera de reunirse?

Crítica de “La probabilidad estadística del amor a primera vista”

Ella es encantadora, tierna, ligeramente desordenada, inteligente y americana.

Él es encantador, tierno, ordenado, inteligente pero sensible e inglés.

Juntos, en un aeropuerto por Navidad, y lo que viene después.

¿Una comedia romántica como tantas otras? Sí, esto no hay quién lo esquive porque “La probabilidad estadística del amor a primera vista” no pretende ser más que eso, otra comedia romántica más que, con algún toque de dramatismo que le de color, venga a engordar la larga lista de comedias románticas de Navidad estrenadas para, precisamente, ir preparando esas fechas que se acercan.

No es que el género tenga nada de malo ni es que “La probabilidad estadística del amor a primera vista” sea una mala película, es que la fórmula está tan vista que, cuando has visto las doscientas primeras, ya dejan de sorprenderte.

Sin embargo, esta película tiene la gracia de reconocerlo y, aún así y sobre datos estadísticos, repetir y negar a la vez estos datos y, curiosamente, hacer una película sobre las posibilidades de encontrar el amor en estos tiempos.

Tampoco la idea es original, porque ya hemos comentado alguna con idéntico planteamiento.

En cuanto a lo técnico, aquí si destaca, y es que está cuidada y cuando el cine americano despliega su sabiduría técnica, se nota: buenos decorados, gran ritmo de montaje y una producción excelsa (para contar la misma historia otra vez, es verdad).

Las interpretaciones, muy bien, pero con las mismas probabilidades que la propia película de ganar un Oscar: los personajes están tan perfilados dentro del género que tampoco dan para grandes alegrías interpretativas: los actores hacen exactamente lo que se espera en una película en la que todos esperan que sean encantadores.

Y lo son.

Nuestra opinión

Una película que intenta por todos los medios ser encantadora en un género que tiene por objetivo describir la vida como encantadora y hacernos creer en el amor.

Sin mucha novedad, sin demasiada alegría.

Estadística y lamentablemente, una más.
