Doi Boy is a movie directed by Nontawat Numbenchapol starring Awat Ratanapintha. With Arak Amornsupasiri, Bhumibhat Thavornsiri, and Panisara Rikulsurakan.

“Doi Boy” is, above all, a film that has a lot to tell in a captivating story that also reveals how, during COVID, the world was still plagued by terrible armed conflicts that did not cease.

It is a remarkable film with a compelling storyline, complex characters, and a challenging yet extraordinary narrative.

Synopsis

Sorn, an ethnic Shan sex worker, endeavors to establish a promising future in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a refugee far from home. However, he becomes entangled in a complex relationship with one client, who is an investigator probing a political activist.

Movie Review

“Doi Boy” knows that it has a whole story to tell and takes itself seriously, treating its characters with utmost seriousness, giving them a voice, and allowing them to develop within the story.

This is not your typical war film with insignificant characters only designed by a studio to showcase spectacular images of warfare. There is more here: well-developed characters, narrative progression, and a cinematic approach that seeks to tell a story.

There are also stunning visuals.

Because “Doi Boy” is not restricted to dialogues alone: the film exudes style throughout, with contrasts, exquisite frames, and remarkable photography.

The actors deliver great performances despite the complexity of their characters. They give their all because they have a well-written script that supports their roles and allows for character development within the narrative.

Beyond the tragic events portrayed, the film showcases a high level of cinematography, aiming to resonate with and captivate the audience, evoking just the right level of discomfort, and telling a story without passing judgment, relying on dialogues, gazes, and powerful visuals.

Our opinion

It is a worthwhile film, one that will never be a blockbuster, but one that leaves a lasting impact on those who watch it.

If you are in the mood for a truly tragic and brutal story, do not hesitate to give it a chance.
