Myrlande Constant: ‘Drapo’. Fort Gansevoort NYC

Martin Cid Magazine

In December, Fort Gansevoort will debut its first exhibition with celebrated Haitian textile artist Myrlande Constant. Featuring a suite of new works, Drapo follows the presentation of Constant’s work in the 59th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition: The Milk of Dreams, curated by Cecilia Alemani. Based in Port-Au-Prince, Constant is best known for her highly adorned, vividly colored large-scale flags emblazoned with masterful beadwork. While drawing upon the vernacular of drapo Vodouwhich traditionally adorn temples and are used in ceremonial practices, Constant’s artwork is prized for its distinctively sensual painterly quality. Surpassing the boundaries of a male-dominated practice, Constant creates flags featuring scenes of Haitian history, current events, and imagery related to the human life cycle. On view at Fort Gansevoort through February 4, 2023, this exhibition provides an overture to Myrlande Constant: The Work of Radiance, opening March 2023 at the Fowler Museum at UCLA–the first museum solo exhibition in the United States devoted to the work of a Haitian female contemporary artist.
