Aassmaa Akhannouch: Un monde oublié – Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, Paris

It’s snack time at the house next door to the grocer. Mint tea, doughnuts cut into pieces the day before and drizzled with honey and melted butter. The great aunt turns her empty glass of tea upside down and, using two small spoons, sets the rhythm.

The mother then begins to sing, her voice so beautiful that it makes her daughter want to go and get the Bendir; her essay for tomorrow can wait. To answer the Bendir, king of the parties with such generous basses, the brother, still a teenager, with a delighted smile on his lips, finds an empty

corner of the table and gives two regular consecutive taps. The percussion of this little orchestra goes so far back in popular memory that the neighbours echo with youyous. Perhaps they’ll join in this party, whose only raison d’être is the sound of two spoons against an empty glass of tea.

This world is buried deep in my memory. It tastes of mint and hot sugar, smells of orange blossom on a spring afternoon. Now that it’s mentioned, I wonder if it really existed or if I invented it. It doesn’t really matter.

Together with Moroccan artist Aaassmaah Akhannouch, we are inviting you to take part in a charity sale to coincide with the exhibition of her new work, Un monde oublié.

Our gallery has always given pride of place to artists from the Maghreb countries, and is in solidarity with the women, children and men of Morocco who have lost everything in one night.

From each sale, we will donate 30% to the special fund set up by the Moroccan government to manage the effects of the earthquake.

The price of the works is 1 000€. 300€ donated to Morocco is not much, but every gesture counts.

C’est l’heure du goûter à la maison juste à côté de l’épicier. Du thé à la menthe, des beignets de la veille coupés en morceaux puis arrosés de miel et de beurre fondu. La grande tante met son verre de thé vide à l’envers puis, avec deux petites cuillères, elle donne le rythme. La mère commence alors à chanter,

sa voix est si belle qu’elle donne envie à sa fille d’aller chercher le Bendir; sa dissertation pour demain peut attendre. Pour répondre au Bendir, roi des fêtes aux basses si généreuses, le frère, encore adolescent, un sourire ravi aux lèvres, se trouve un coin de table vide et donne deux tapes consécutives régulières.

Les percussions de ce petit orchestre remontent si loin dans la mémoire populaire, qu’en écho, des youyous retentissent chez les voisins. Peut-être se joindront-ils à cette fête qui n’a de raison d’être que le son de deux cuillères contre un verre de thé vide.

Ce monde est enfoui au fond de ma mémoire. Il a le goût de menthe et de sucre chaud, l’odeur de fleur d’oranger, un après-midi de printemps.

Maintenant qu’il est évoqué, je me demande s’il a réellement existé ou si je l’ai inventé. Peu importe.

Notre galerie, depuis toujours, donne une place importante aux artistes des pays du Maghreb et est solidaire avec ces femmes, enfants et hommes du Maroc qui en une nuit ont tout perdu.

De chaque vente, nous verserons 30 % au Fonds spécial de gestion des effets du tremblement de terre lancé par le gouvernement du Maroc.

Le prix des oeuvres est de 1 000€. 300€ versés au Maroc, ce n’est pas beaucoup, mais chaque geste compte.
